Bright Pledges Positive Campaign

Filed under: Campaign & Election, AL and DC — Danny @ 4:47 pm

Democratic nominee Bobby Bright pledged today in a release “to run a positive, issue-based campaign in his race for Alabama’s 2nd District.” A nice gesture that 1) gets him to the high road first quickly for those who appreciate that sort of thing, and 2) no doubt helps some voters recall that his GOP opponent Jay Love was in a Republican primary that was a bit …ummm… testy. (Perhaps even one of the Top 15 Exciting Republican Primaries.)

Here is the text of the release:

For Immediate Release: July 22, 2008

Mayor Bobby Bright Signs Positive Campaign Pledge

Bright Promises to Run Respectful Campaign, Asks Love to Pledge As Well

Montgomery, Ala. – Mayor Bobby Bright today signed a pledge to run a positive, issue-based campaign in his race for Alabama’s 2nd District. Bright pledged to abide by the teachings of his faith and conduct himself and his campaign in a manner respectful to the people he wishes to represent.

“I will always live by the values I was raised with and conducted myself in a manner that maintains people’s faith in our country’s leaders,” said Bright. “In this campaign, the people of Alabama’s 2nd District want to hear about both candidates’ records, values, and plans to create jobs, lower gas prices, and end illegal immigration. That is why I am pledging today to run a campaign that respects the voters of Alabama and focuses on bringing people together rather than tearing people down.”

Bright signed the positive campaign pledge and posted a copy in his campaign office to ensure that every member of his campaign team adheres to the same values. He also ordered a copy of the pledge hand delivered to Jay Love’s campaign office, requesting that Love make the same promises to the people of Alabama’s 2nd District.

Below is the text of the campaign pledge Bright signed today:

CAMPAIGN PLEDGE

With our nation at war and our economy in uncertain times, I believe it is important to unite our country and maintain faith in the integrity of our government leaders. As campaign tactics have the potential to harm public faith and undermine confidence in America ’s democratic system, I hereby pledge that, as a candidate for the United States House of Representatives, I will:

ABIDE BY the teaching of my faith and follow the Ten Commandments as laid out in Exodus Ch ap ter 20 of the Old Testament, specifically the 9th Commandment, and the teachings of Christ on the “greatest commandment” as put forth in Matthew 22: 36-40;

ABIDE BY all campaign laws and procedures;

CONDUCT myself in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity of our electoral system;

CONDUCT my campaign honestly and make myself available to share my positions and opinions with the people I wish to represent;

REFUSE TO defame the character of my opponent, his personal religious beliefs, political party affiliation, or to condone the actions of those who do;

REFUSE TO defame the character of our President and our elected Representatives in Congress;

CONDEMN the use of whisper campaigns, libel, slander, or attacks on my opponent’s family members;

CONDEMN the use of campaign material of any sort that misrepresents, distorts, or otherwise falsify the facts regarding my opponent, his political party, or another elected official as well as the use of malicious or unfounded accusations against any candidate or party;

CONDEMN any ap peal to prejudice based on race or creed;

DISAVOW PUBLICLY any material and advertising that are not factually accurate or that fail to disclose the identity behind such campaign activities and the source of funding;

STRIVE TO build honest, productive consensus between myself and my opponent and between our political parties on the issues challenging our state and our nation today;

SUBMIT copies of this pledge to my campaign workers, volunteers, and key supporters.

This 22nd day of July 2008.

Mayor Bobby Bright

  1. I’ll bet you $598,000 that pro-bobby and anti-jay ads will be running in cd2, regardless of bobby’s “be nice to me” pledge…

  2. Oh, without a doubt anonymous, but as Danny says Bright gets on the high road first. It’s an attack maneuver without being overtly an attack.

  3. Bright is a liar. He has no intention of a “positive” campaign. What a fake.

  5. Good pledge, be nice to see other candidates across the state adopt it.

  6. you’re right walt, this would be a good pledge if it was sincere. the fact that bright knows he has almost $600,000 worth of negative ads coming from the dccc makes his “pledge” an easy political play. but of course, the dccc is acting “independently” of its “independent” candidate, and he will proclaim that he had “no knowledge” that negative ads would be run against love. pardon me if i don’t get a warm and fuzzy feeling from bright’s peace offering…

  7. when your opponent has been hit for the last three months with negative ads, it is pretty easy to say you are not going to run them.

  9. i don’t know, 8, oxygen levels are fairly steady in montgomery…now the crime in montgomery, unlike the oxygen level, is a little higher for sure - especially under a mayor that has vigorously “fought” to reduce crime levels…

  10. I see that the Republican Party and Jay Love are not just frantically trying to respond to an ad that has all of Dothan excited, they are paying interns to have conversation with themselves on a blog. Pathetic.

    Comment by Wiregrass Republican — July 22, 2008 @ 7:56 pm

  11. If Dothan is “excited” about the Bobby Bright ad, then that town has some serious issues. Of course, not as serious as Montgomery with Bright as mayor.

    Under Bright, employment has fallen, crime is up and he jacked up our taxes, as well. To borrow a phrase from Al Gore, “What should be down is up and what should be up is down.”

  14. The “Pledge” by Bobby Bright is a crock of bull—-! If he is trying to get the Love campaign to not remind people that he is a LIBERAL DEMMOCRAT, he is in for a rude awakwening.

    His political party affiliation has EVERYTHING in the world to do with his candidacy! His affiliation with Obama, Pelosi, Rangel, etc., is most relevant in this political campaign.

    Sorry Bobby, I know you are desperate, and EVERY national publication with merit, has picked this race to be won by the republican nominee, but this is unheard of.

    Politics is a contact sport, and I suggest that if Mr. Bright “can’t take the heat than he better step out of the kitchen.”

    Bobby, I don’t know for sure (but i have a good idea) what the Love folks will say about not mentioning your party affiliation. But, I can promise you one thing, I for one, and many, many, others will do our best to bring that up every day until November 4th!!!
    You are a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT running under the DEMOCRAT label!!!

    Comment by LD — July 23, 2008 @ 8:14 am

  15. I’m SO excited about Bobby Bright running. Finally, a progressive candidate for the second district who believes in equality, choice for women and the fact that tax (paid by those other than the poor) is not a dirty word. Go Bobby!

    Comment by Wiregrass Democrat — July 23, 2008 @ 9:40 am

  16. I just wanted to point out that Bobby Bright has out-christianed Jay Love with this one. Jay tells you how great of a Christian is, Bobby shows you his character and does not trumpet his faith, he just references the Bible. How many times has Jay Love pointed out an exact piece of scripture…none.

  17. Post #16 That is a bunch of bull! Bobby Bright has tried to make us believe that by “blessing us” with this “campaign pledge” that he is taking the moral high road.

    Of course Mr. Love is going to be a gentleman in the general election campaign. But He is not going to “dummy up” and not talk about party affiliation and point out that his opponent is on the other side.

    Also, the part about “building an honest,productive consensus between myself and my opponent and between our political parties on the issues challenging our state and our nation today.” What the heck is he talking about? — General elections, i.e., Democratic candidates vs. Republican candidates, is about stating differences in party philosophy and any individual differences that the two candidates might have. Does Bobby want him and Mr. Love to run around holding hands also? I almost wanted to puke when I read that one.

    It sounds like to me that Mr. Bright wants Mr. Love to keep quiet and don’d talk about him being a democrat, and not to talk about how he raised taxes in Montgomery, and not talk about his stance on the sanctity of human life, etc.

    Let’s face it, if elected, his first vote would be to elect his buddy, Nancy Pelosi (see campaign contributions) to the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Then he would meet with his buddy Mr. Obama, (see campaign contributions from Illinois) if he is elected president, and find out what his role would be and how, as a devoted democrat, he is supposed to “tow the party line.”

    Bobby, you have insulted my intelligence, and I’m sure you have insulted many other district 2 residents, by presenting us with this bogus pledge bull—! Why don’t you take the “pledge” and stick it where the “sun don’t shine.”

    Campaigns are about issues and differences buddy! Get used to hearing it. LIBERAL DEMOCRAT, BOBBY BRIGHT!!!

  18. #15 you made an almost identical full-of-crap post earlier on another thread. You are 1) almost certainly not a Demo and 2) almost ceratinly not from the Wiregrass. Bobby Bright has a long clear, committed pro-life record.

    You’re a liar about all sorts of things - your name on here included.

    Show some class and say “I’m a Republican and am against Bright” rather than lying, although that is the Official Jay Love Strategy.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 23, 2008 @ 12:10 pm

  19. Here is “Wirgrass Democrat’s” earlier, near-identical lying post about Bright on another thread which i have pasted below for comparison. You Love staffers need to be more creative:

    “I’m voting for Bobby Bright because he said he will protect a woman’s right to choose and will finally be someone who will vote to roll back the Bush tax cuts. Go Bobby!

    Comment by Wiregrass Democrat — July 22, 2008 @ 1:59 pm” - on a previous thread

    I would also point out that Bright has been officially endorsed by PRO-LIFE GROUPS so your lies about that are particularly low and disgusting.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 23, 2008 @ 12:16 pm

  20. I’m confused by all of this. If being pro-choice, for a progressive tax system and equal rights is not being a Democrat, then I’m in the wrong party — which I’m not.

    Comment by Wiregrass Democrat — July 23, 2008 @ 3:17 pm

  21. Bright is not pro-choice, “wiregrass demo” so you should not support him. He is avidly pro-life.

    Since you now know this - and have been corrected on multiple occasions - I expect you will no longer lie about it on this board.

    Lying is bad. Stop doing it.

    Again - Bobby Bright is and always has been pro-life. I will continue to point this out every time “wiregrass demo” lies about that on this board.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 23, 2008 @ 3:51 pm

  22. I rather have a Mayor that has raised taxes and created a surplus than a do nothing state rep. that has voted to raise taxes. LD you are a neo-conservative fascist fool. Over then past 10 years most races have been about the candidate and not about the party. Read a book, get an education, and take that autographed picture of Bill Riley off your wall! Painting Bright as a liberal will never work. Love can keep trying but the citizens of this district are smart enough to see through the lies of this wimpy city slicker and they will elected a honorable man like Bobby Bright. By the way he is pro-life so that sanctity of life issue will not be Jay Love’s path to victory.
