AL-02: Bright Spot in Dothan
AL-02 Democratic nominee Bobby Bright went up with a big media buy in Dothan yesterday, 60 second spots, not 30 seconds. Not in Montgomery.

If he can keep this type of ad up, and not be drawn into a “who attacked who” fight with Mr. Love, Mr. Bright will be the next Congressman. That as is dynamite!

I know the Bright family and they were raised to work hard with great integrity. There were also,so much love in their family that it made you feel good to be around them
If he gets to be congressman he will work hard for the people ,not just the party. He thinks hard before he makes a decision and it’s not treated lightly either. He also has done alot for Montgomery. Of course he has his critics just like anyone else.In my opinion there couldn’t be a better man for congress.
Comment by tips — July 17, 2008 @ 12:33 pm
Yeah, it is very Sue Bell-esque with the gospel music in the background and do y’all remember that Lucy Baxley ad where she said, “I’ll never forget where I came from”? He’s got that too.
He needs to STAY ON this pro-gun anti-abortion thing. Love’s already swinging at him on that. Love’s associtating Democrats with San Francisco liberals. Bright also needs to focus on staying on Everett’s committees as he’s been promiced by US House Leadership…if I were Everett, I would endorse Bright in this one…Love is a whack-job.
If Bright and Love ever debate, it will be a homerun for Bobby.
Comment by Ad Wizard — July 17, 2008 @ 1:15 pm
Wow, That is the first ad in weeks that does not make sick to watch. It gives me hope that maybe this race will be about the issues.

Bobby Bright is the greatest. His powers are surpassed only by those of the Lord Messiah Obama.
P.S. Kudos to those using “republican” in their names. They’ll never suspect we’re all Bright staffers.

I want to know when the democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama, and the democratic Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, are going to be down in District 2, campaigning for their buddy Bobby!
They should be a big hit down in this “neck of the woods.”
That “I’m my own man” stuff that Bobby spews is a bunch of crap! he is a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT!
Comment by LD — July 17, 2008 @ 3:17 pm
Bobby Bright has not lived in the wiregrass area in over thirty years! He’s not a resident down here. So don’t fall for that bull.
Lucy Baxley’s results were certainly great when she talked about her “Pansey/Ashford roots.” She was stomped soundly. And didn’t David Woods try to play that card too? He hasn’t lived down here in over 25 years and he tried to have us believe that he was a member of one of our local churches. David got stomped also!
He’ll run that ad down here in the Dothan market for a while, then he’ll run a different ad in the Montgomery market trying to posture himself in a different light up there. Come on Bobby we are not all stupid. We see the game you are playing.
Bobby, Why don’t you move to Chicago or San Francisco, according to your financial report they love you in those LIBERAL CITIES! You would fit in just nicely there.
Comment by LD — July 17, 2008 @ 3:39 pm
That line of attack was very effective against James Fields in the Cullman special election, LD. If Love’s supporters honestly think running against the Democratic brand when the Republican brand is at a modern low will work, they are insane. Love is the favorite in this race, but if this is all he’s got it won’t stay that way for long.
Comment by SamfordDem — July 17, 2008 @ 3:57 pm
LD must stand for Learning Disability
Bobby Bright has a record of accomplishments longer than Jay Love’s chicken legs.

SamfordDem you will have to enlghten me about the James Field/Cullman race. I’m not familiar with that race.
Also my young friend, special elections are much, much different than running in a presidential election year with a great american like John McCain heading the GOP ticket. Mr. Love is in very good shape in my opinion.

Comment by gvillefarmer — July 17, 2008 @ 4:10 pm
SamfordDem:
Not attacking or flaming you but I’m wondering why you think Love is the favorite? Is it because it’s been a republican district for so long now? I noticed on Bright’s website that the Wetumpka paper said he should win hands down in Novemeber before they even knew who he would face. The Wetumpka Herald stated that the negative tone of the Rep runoff would help Bright. Also I noticed that Bright has almost 300k in his warchest while Love is now under 100k.

Comment by Know — July 17, 2008 @ 4:23 pm
You people are idioits. It doesn not matter if Jay Love grew up here or Bobby Bright either. It is ONE district. Quit spliting yourselves based on where you are from. They will do what is good for the entire district and not play favorites. If this were case wouldn’t Terry Everett have saved jobs at Rucker under BRAC. We are losing hundreds of engineering jobs to Huntsville. Terry is from the wiregrass..how could this happen? Simple, politicians are a sum of the whole. If you want the Republican agenda to succeed you need to get behind Jay Love. This will ensure taxes do not increase, that military spending is not cut, and that small businesses are looked after (especially medical costs). Or vote for the democratic agenda and elect Bright if you want an increase in taxes, military spending cuts, socialists agendas, etc.
Comment by Enterprise — July 17, 2008 @ 4:30 pm
LD,
I congratulate you on trying to connect Bright to neo-liberal national Democrats. Why? Because is Love and others like yourself keep this record up, YOU WILL LOSE!
P.S. I attend Church every Sunday. I believe that abortion and homosexuality are sins but I am the President of the College DEMOCRATS.
I reckon I must be a neo-liberal too. Facts are there are neo-liberal, liberal, moderate, social conservative Democrats. Just like there are neo-conservative, conservative, moderate, and of course liberal. Although in Alabama the liberal republicans tend to be in the libertarian party
Maybe you should take a intro political science class or read a book.
Thank You

#19 (LD) & #27 (Enterprise): For me, it is a lot easier to relate to a man that grew up on a farm no matter how long ago, than a man that has never lived on one.
I like the fact Bright came from nothing (and sharecroppers have nothing, trust me) to a man running for congress.
Voting for the party does not mean what it use too thanks to the GOP and Dems in washington. We all are going to have to get to know the person now, whether it be Love or Bright.
Comment by gvillefarmer — July 17, 2008 @ 4:46 pm
Again,I am not stating that Bright is anything more than a member of the democratic party. Politicians tend to vote along party lines. The aforementioned issues are what democrats are pushing to make law. If you think Bright will continuously vote against his party you are sadly mistaken.
I do not need your personal attacks, and certainly do not need to take any more courses, I have two degrees, one from West Point and one from Auburn.
I am not attacking you or Bright, instead I am being realistic about what can be accomplished through each party.
I have met Jay Love and respect him, his beliefs, and his integrity. Jay too comes from humble beginningsas well, and made his own success story through business and through life.
Bottom Line: vote for who you think will best represent your values or lack thereof.

Except that the special election I refered to was in a presidential year, the week before the presidential primary. Yes, it was a special election, but attempts to nationalize the election either had zero impact or backfired. I am speaking from a strategy perspective and you cannot get people fired up to vote against the Democrats anymore because they have seen how poorly the alternative has governed. There are not enough Democrat-haters to win an election in AL 2. Bobby Bright, like Tavis Childers and Don Cazyoux, has bucked the national party line on guns and life and he has an excellent chance to win this election because of that.
Comment by SamfordDem — July 17, 2008 @ 5:41 pm
Anon in #30 - Jay Love’s daddy bought him some sandwich shops and he sold ‘em for millions. That’s not nearly the same as being the 13th of 14 children and putting yourself through school.
Jay is a mama’s boy who has never even left Montgomery. I bet he has never had calloused hands from handling a shovel, or even a farmer’s tan from manning a plow, or just riding a tractor.
I am a Republican and I could never vote for a country club rich wimp like that!!
Comment by Wiregrass Republican — July 17, 2008 @ 5:49 pm
I am not sure you understand how this system works. The washington folk do not keep you in office, rather the people that live in your district give you the pink slip or not.
THE REASON BRIGHT RAN AS A DEM is to help bring money here, grants here, and get on the Committees that matter here, like military and agriculture.
You are crazy if you think a republican is going to have first choice of anything in a Dem controlled congress.
If you really want to help a district, hop on the winning team and bring as much of the bacon home as you can. The Dems are the winning team right now nation wide

Maybe Larry Craig will come down and make an appearace with MArk Foley for Jay Love. That
old stuff don’t work anymore boys. The R’s that
campaigned for lower taxes, pro family, reducing
illiegal immigration, must be somewhere else
because they sure aren’t in D.C. And on the crime
issue I guess the billions of dollars that the R
administration has spent on reduing the importing
of drugs into the US while we set on our a**es and
watvch the poppy fileds growing in Ghanistan really
makes a lot of sense to me. I really like the part where the D’s give credit to Bush for the billions of dollars to fight Aids in Africa. What about giving it to poor elerly folks in the US who have to decide between food, gas, or medicine. Are you better off today than you were 8 years ago?? #19 … “And didn’t David Woods try to play that card too? He hasn’t lived down here in over 25 years and he tried to have us believe that he was a member of one of our local churches. David got stomped also!” No card trying to be played, just a man stating his connection and ties to the Wiregrass. Being born there, having family roots, and being married there certainly qualifies for having roots, and therefore caring about the people there. And check your information, he never said he was a member of Calvary Baptist. He was baptized there, attended church there with his family for 20 years, and ultimately married there. Sorry, I had to say something. I voted for David Woods and I am from Dothan. I knew his family, and I know him. He is a good man, who sincerely wanted to represent ALL of the people of the 2nd District. I hope he considers running for some office again, as we would all be the better for it.

#34, if bright is going to “bring home the bacon” he will need to align with the views of the majority, so that they will allow him to bring home said bacon, probably the reason behind the donation from “pelosi for congress” that appears on his fec reports. Bobby’s used to convincing the locals down at po’ folks that the biscuits will win their division and if you build it, they will come,I promise that’s a far cry from convincing pelosi to give you some “bacon” cause you’re a blue dog. You also claim that “bringing home the bacon” is the only reason he ran as a dem, well that’s not what he says. Bobby says he ran as a dem b/c the republicans wanted him to support the views of bush, which is comical considering bush will no longer be in office.bright will do what he thinks it will take to win, he will say what makes everyone warm and fuzzy and act like he’s not a politician, but at the end of the day, bobby will do and say whatever it takes to further his political career.

Re;# 41
You can write what you may but I personally know Bobby Bright and I’d like to make one strong statement about who this man really is and what he has always stood for. Bobby is a good christian man who has always been very focused. He possesses the convictions of a man whom can make decisions based on the christian morals instilled in him by his parents while growing up in Dale County, Al.
Bobby will not be easily influenced by either party if he is not 100% convinced their decisions will be good for the enhancement of the country. (He has been telling all the folks in district 2 this since he first announced he was a candidate).
Comment by 02 Voter — July 17, 2008 @ 9:21 pm
#45, i know this is tough so hang in there. i’m sure bobby is a christian, i’m sure his decisions will be based on the all the morals of dale county, i’m sure bobby’s been tellin everyone this. but 45, if bobby’s a democrat, and democrats are controlled by certain powerful figures that control votes, then how is his upbringing going to change that? what is growing up in dale county really going to do to change the price of gas? if bobby is going to sit back and wait to be “100% convinced” then he’s not the man for the job. there are times that during a crisis you got to make a move, you have to go with what you feel is right, even if you are not 100%convinced. if the decision only impacted bobby, then bobby could sit back and wait to be 100% convinced, but these decisions will not be about him, they will be about the people he wants to represent. this is the big leagues, not deciding on whether or not to restore a fountain at the end of dexter avenue. i’m sure he’s real good at making those types of decisions because they do not impact anyone and he can take all the time he needs to convince himself 100% that it’s the right decision to make.

#41 from #34. Do you expect Jay Love to pull more money from a Dem congress than a Dem. The reason we do miss out on so many grants and aid from bills is the fact we are marked up as a give-me to the GOP no matter what. Competion is always good. If we let congress know we are not only a red district then both parties will try to get grants and aid down here for our farms and military.
Also, it appears nation wide that the Dems are going to come out well in Nov. That means sooner than later this war will be over and gov’t controlled money will be pooring back into this country again that has been being spent in iraq. I would rather have a Dem with his hand out than a GOP in that case.
Bright has also done a great job finding money in Washington for Montgomery. Many of the downtown improvements have been funded by grants.
Comment by Anonymous — July 17, 2008 @ 10:09 pm
#46 Some of your points are true he goes for what he thinks is correct and he doesn’t have to think twice about it most of the time.I would take his assessments in half a minute than most people I know. He’s very intelligent and I can say that for sure.HE’s got the BRAINS SON.That’s what we need in washington.
Comment by tips — July 17, 2008 @ 10:32 pm
he was never recruited to run as a Republican. He loves saying that as it makes him look more moderate. He also did not run as a dem because they will “allow him to vote his views” He ran as a dem as they promised him lots of cash and more importantly, he knew he couldn’t win the Rep. primary. Blue dog is in name only - he will be expecting to tow the line od dem votes. and he will do so.
He will run a good race but lose in the end.
Comment by Anonymous — July 18, 2008 @ 12:40 pm
Bright will be a Bud Cramer type Dem. Cramer always put district and country before party and made it work - why would you think Bright can’t do the same/
Comment by Blue Dog — July 18, 2008 @ 2:26 pm
Heated discussions here today. I find the statement that Bright will have to “toe” the party line interesting. Not that I disagree with the statement, but instead that no one countered with a “so will Love”.
A more important question might be - Should Love win; having bashed and attacked Pelosi, Rangel, Kennedy, and others, how can he be an effective congressman after the majority assigns him an office in the last stall in the men’s room?
Additionally, so what if Bright received funds from Pelosi for Congress. Love received funds from trial lawyers, bankers, realtors, oil companies, and 2-year college system employees. Does this mean that Love will sell-out his constituents to satisfy the legislative needs of his contributors? I hope not!
Dems and Dem-leaning PACs will contribute to the Dem candidate, and Rep and Rep-leaning PACs will contribute to the Rep candidate. That’s just politics.
Finally - Bright’s ad is one of the best this cycle. Love will be challenged to one up it.
Comment by JRay — July 18, 2008 @ 3:01 pm

Comment by Anonymous — July 18, 2008 @ 4:10 pm
Anonymous #41, you are absolutely incorrect. The Blue Dogs who make their votes count are the ones who often do the best job bringing home the bacon. That’s what Bud Cramer did and I think Bobby Bright is very much cut from that cloth.

#50, “he was never recruited to run as a Republican.”
If so, then why did I hear David Grimes say that he decided to run after Bright said he was running as a Democrat. It was on April 23 at an event that the Troy College Republicans hosted. Grimes talked for while over 5 mins about how he was expecting Bright to run as Republican. He talked that about how Bright was pressured by Republican leaders. If fact the majority of his Q&A was about Mayor Bright.
I am glad the Republican Chairman, Mike Hubbard, got his little call boy, Jay Love, the nomination. But most importantly I’m glad that the best man in this race decided to run as a Democrat.
Just thought I’d let you in the KNOW Mr. Anonymous.

thanks college guy - glad you are in the know. we all believe you and can put that issue to bed. just one thing though, are you saying that because grimes said it, that it is then true? interesting. bright may have a friend or two that vote and possibly donate republican, and they MAY have asked him to consider running as a republican out of that friendship. but i will bet your northface jacket and the 18 pairs of patagonias that you own, no republican leader asked bobby to run as a republican.

Re; 62
Your remarks about the party’s affiliation are simply redundant. First off, who cares about who asked Bobby to run on what ticket? Most Alabamians I know don’t! Most of them I have talked to have said they are proud Bobby made the decision to run as a Democrat since the DEMS are now and will be in CONTROL of CONGRESS for the next few years. If you’d listened to the debates closely, you’d have heard him make that same statement and this can’t be disputed!
Secondly, the man is wise enough to know this country is headed in the wrong direction and that drastic measures must be taken soon to reverse the out of control spending or our dollars will be worth only dimes. This can’t be disputed! The US is spending billions of borrowed dollars per month in IRAQ alone. This does not include Afganistan.
Thats borrowed money that we and our children will be forced to repay. This can’t be disputed!
Have you looked at the present rate of inflation lately? Rates are the highest since the 70s and getting higher everyday. Have you tracked the stocks lately? Hard working American families can’t afford health care and are losing their hard earned retirement savings due to the present status of the economy. And here you are wanting to debate party’s which in my opinion is nonsense!
Comment by 02 Voter — July 20, 2008 @ 7:28 am
I know for a fact ,the repubs wanted him ,they flew him to Washington and tried to negociate him being their candidate .but he refused , The Democrats was also wanting him too.he chose what he thought was the best. so the rest is history. And you know it is a shame when parties do those things.ISAY VOTE FOR THE MAN NOT THE PARTY.Bobby will work with both parties to try to get the right thing done .BELIEVE IT!!
Comment by Tips — July 20, 2008 @ 9:02 am
little College Dem. When the rates were high in the 70’s, so realize that a Republican led the way out of the recession? You probably were not alive then, but this can not be disputed.
Haha..everything you said can be disputed. The only reason democrats would be in control would be if dumbasses such as yourself, continue to elect more democrats. Recall the Clinton administration, and how the REPUBLICAN Congress led the way. Just because someone is projected to win the WH in November, doesn’t mean that their party will control the House and Senate. Don’t you know how politics work little boy.
Comment by anonymous — July 20, 2008 @ 1:37 pm
#65: I don’t know why I should make a rebuttal to your comments. I really don’t think anyone on either side has taken you serious since 3 out of 4 remarks in your post were personal attacks and name calling, Real classy and educated by the way.
However, let me clear up one thing you stated. This race might be up in the air, the White House might be up in the air, the Senate is definitely up in the air, but Congress is going to be blue after November. The only way the GOP will pick up enough seats to control Congress is if some major mess up (like Katrina ) happens and is blamed on the Dems, and even with Bush in office till well after the election that is still a hard prediction to make.
