A press conference in which Attorney General Troy King would deny all rumors raised this past week was planned for this afternoon in anticipation of a Sunday Birmingham News story which did not materialize, two sources close to the AG tell the Political Parlor. King was planning a “full confrontational” response to the anticipated Sunday story, but now the sources do not believe the rumored Birmingham News story will run.

Interesting. I wonder if he will make any public appearances . . . and if so if any reporters will ask him anything (or if they will consider it totally off limits). If it’s true, this will be a slow, painful political death. If it’s not true . . . he strategy of wading it out might have been the best one.
You say it best…when you say nothing at allllllllll.
The strategy may be the best one but he is still done in Alabama politics.
Tobie – I think you are wrong. The AG withstood the very best shot from his detractors. An entire week of such vicious allegations would test anyone’s resolve. I think he emerges a stronger Attorney General — he and the Birmingham News went toe-to-toe and the Birmingham News blinked. Not too many politicans can claim that victory.
The Birmingham News is a Newhouse publication. The only politicians it attacks are Democrats. If anything the News may have had a new reporter who thought s/he was on to something and the ownership decided to remind them who writes their pay check.
#4 are you serious? Just wondering.
This is a guy who was already a punchline. There is no way on this planet this incident helps him. He’ll never be governor. I think it is a long shot that he can survive a campaign for re-election as AG.
How can you say, #4, that Troy King has “withstood the very best shot from his detractors”????? He hasn’t even started taking the heat he will take on this. Mainstream media has yet to even touch this story. When they do – and they will- the real firestorm will erupt and King has detractors lined up to take their tons of flesh . . .
This is only beginning for King. He will not enjoy it. It will not end well.
His career – regardless of what happens from here on in – is effectively over.
#5 – That’s so ignorant.
#7 – MSM will not ever pick up the story because there is no story. Unless you think that some how every single political reporter in the state is in collusion with the ALGOP and is just smothering a story to help out their ol’ friends. Even then that doesn’t make any sense because half of the ALGOP doesn’t really like Troy and wouldn’t mind seeing him go down.
The only way, absolutely the only way, for the rumors to be going this long without even a hint of publication means that there is no substance to the story. Otherwise, we’d be seeing an “according to sources close to the situation” story or even “sources within the ALGOP tell us.”
#6 – I partially agree with you. I think he would win re-election as AG simply because most Alabamians support his legal platform (tough on crime, strong on death penalty etc.) but I’ve always felt that he was a long shot for Gov. even before this happened and I think it makes him an even longer one now.
So, they were actually going to run a story?
Loretta, I think there are papers all over the state with this story already written, but they don’t have enough hard fact to go with UNLESS Troy says something (like holding a press confrence) that would put the rumors into mainstream media.
I am guessing another show will eventually drop on this.
#8 I agree with a lot of what you say, but I do believe that MSM will not go with a story – even one as big as this – without very hard concrete fact to back it up. For example, several unnnamed sources wouldn’t make this a go (even if they are reliable). I don’t think anyone is forcing them not to go with it but I also do NOT believe that means there is “no story” here. It could be a very big, very real story.
IF Troy held a press conference, all those “unnamed sources” COULD be used in a MS news story and all hell breaks lose . . .that’s why there was no presser in the absence of the story breaking and there won’t be a press conference until another shoe drops in this story . . .which may happen soon.
#8 I would remind you how long MSM had the Lewinsky story and did not go with it. The length of time between rumor emergence and publication has little to do with how real a story is – or how factual.
If the other shoe drops in this story . . .it might be Troy’s high-heeled Manolo . . .
#11 – Citing several unnamed sources is standard practice. (Think New York Times and the SWIFT program story.) It’s irresponsible, but standard. However, I think you’re probably right in that it would take one solid fact to support the unnamed sources. Perhaps I was a bit hasty in my assessment.
#12 – Fair enough, except that no one held that story for even 30 minutes after the blogs broke it (namely Drudge). Seeing as how this has been on every single political blog of record in AL (and even some nationally) I don’t think that point holds here.
Or a nifty, high-heeled, red leather cowboy boot like the ones JD Crowe depicted him in a few months ago.
#14 I would refer you to Michale Isikov’s (sp?) book on Clinton (”Uncovering Clinton”). He had the Lewinsky story for months and did not publish due to several factors, and the only reason he went to press was because he was in danger of being scoooped due to the blogs. That is not happening with this story.
News organizations had several other stories about Clinton for months and sometimes years without publishing. Sexual misconduct stories are ticklish for media and the rules are different.
I think this story may be very real and the half-life of this seems to give credence to that. Remember, the Birmingham News has a story written. I don’t think they just waste time up there. There is enough there for them to expend time and effort. That alone implies there is some evidence to support the story. So I don’t think the “no story here” line works.
One of the biggest advertisers – if not THE biggest – in the Birmingham News is the Alabama Power Company. Troy King’s biggest political contributor is the Alabama Power Company.
Wanna guess why that story got held?
There were at least three different daily newspapers working on this story — not one found anything worthy of print. Please keep in mind that the B’ham News has been anti-King since day one. I think that if there were anything to this story, that newspaper would have printed their story and forced King to prove that it was not true.
Anonymous in 17, do you have a link or something that shows Alabama Power is one of the biggest advertisers of the Birmingham News?
Politicalnut I don’t agree about media in this instance, especially when you say “not one found anything worthy of print.” I think it is more likely that AT THE PRESENT TIME they are not confident that they have enough concrete fact to go with and I would guess that the balance (printing now vs. waiting) is very close on that point. I certainly don’t think there is nothing here. It’s close enough that it’s a real judgement call as to whether to print or not, and that means that eventually this story will likely break. But it could be several days (although that is unlikely).
#19 APCO runs full page ads on the back of the first section of the Birmingham News regularly – often on Sundays.
They are a major advertiser.
I’ve seen several people claim to have high level Republican sources who stand by this story. We all know the highest Republican in Alabama is Jill Simpson, tasked by Rove himself with obtaining compromising photos of Siegelman. I wonder if she is the source of this rumor? After all, wasn’t it first brought out by Alabama’s most trusted news source, the Locust Fork Journal?
Since this is only a Blog rumor, it must be true. But a conviction of the Don by 12 of his peers is flase.
I can see the Socialist-Democrat logic in that
PeeCan Jim makes being a Dem shameful. I know better that most are smart and credible. It’s those posts that give everyone else a bad name.
