At the Thursday breakfast of the Republican Governors Association last week, Alabama state Treasurer Kay Ivey was one of 16 VIP’s recognized as “future leaders.”

At the conclusion of this event, Ivey released this statement:

I was honored to be asked to attend the Republican Governor’s Assocation meeting and recognized as an emerging leader of the Republican Party. State officials are on the front line of effective government. I’ve seen that in my experience as Treasurer, efficiency and relevance in meeting people’s needs is what counts.

I’ve met some of our nation’s finest Governors. I appreciate their encouragement to seek higher office. Governor Riley has set a wonderful example of leadership and it would be a high honor to follow in his footsteps.

I will be listening to the people of Alabama over the next several months before making a final decision.

Plus she has a million dollars in her campaign account… does that sound like a gubernatorial candidate to you?

Alabama’s Costly Court Contest

The Supreme Court race was won by Republican Greg Shaw after county canvass boards across the state finished counting outstanding ballots on Friday. This nails down the last statewide race in favor of the Republicans who won 6 of 7 of the statewide races. The GOP keeps a hammerlock on the state judiciary: among the judges on the Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal Appeals, and the Court of Civil Appeals, Supreme Court Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb is the lone Democrat.

Associated Press reported that “the candidates and outside groups spent more than $5 million on the race, which may end up the most expensive court race in the U.S. this year.”

Which calls to mind the matter in West Virginia of whether a justice should recuse himself from a case involving a major campaign contributor and that is now going to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Growing Allegations in Siegelman Case

I have my own jury duty this week. Yee-ha. And lots to catch up on here from the weekend/end-of-the-week.

The story of the conviction of former Governor Don Siegelman gets more interesting with the report Friday that a whistle-blower has provided internal prosecution emails to the Department of Congress and to Congress. Time Magazine reports, “Now new documents highlight alleged misconduct by the Bush-appointed U.S. Attorney and other prosecutors in the case, including what appears to be extensive and unusual contact between the prosecution and the jury.”

From the article:

[House Judiciary Committee Chair John] Conyers says the evidence raises “serious questions” about the U.S. Attorney [Leura Canary] in the Siegelman case, who, documents show, continued to involve herself in the politically charged prosecution long after she had publicly withdrawn to avoid an alleged conflict of interest relating to her husband, a top GOP operative and close associate of Bush adviser Karl Rove. Conyers’ letter [to Attorney General Mukasey] also cites evidence of numerous contacts between jurors and members of the Siegelman prosecution team that were never disclosed to the trial judge or defense counsel.
