Bright Fundraiser Last Week

Fundraiser Invitation for Bobby Bright, May 8, 2008AL-02 Democratic candidate Bobby Bright raised $75k at a fundraiser last week for his Congressional campaign, according to a source close to the campaign. The event had no host committee and was put together by developer Jerry Kyser and Greg Allen of Beasley Allen. If Bright is dreaming of pulling off what Travis Childers did last night in Mississippi, he’ll need more successes like this. His first quarter fundraising #’s were anemic, though he probably will not face a strong primary challenge from state NOW President Cheryl Sabel or Dentist Cendie Crawley.

Bright may face a GOP nominee with his or her own fundraising woes. The GOP has already shown to be at a financial disadvantage this year, and we are not seeing signs that it is getting any better. The NRCC spent about 20% of available money in last night’s unsuccessful attempt to defend a red seat in the South and is 0 for 3 in House special elections this year, all in right-leaning districts. Will donors to GOP campaigns begin to cut and run?

$54,000 in three weeks is not anemic, it’s expected. I know many people throughout the district that report getting personal calls from Mayor Bright asking for support. He sounds like a humble public servant to me!

I would bet good money on Bright having more in his accounts than any of the Republicans post run off.

Nationally, have no problems seeing the R’s donors cut their losses and move to the D column. In the wiregrass, dunno know, looks like it could be a urban vs rural fight like the Childress election was.

Wow 75K is a lot of money by anyone’s standards!

54k is pitiful by anyone’s standards for an incumbent politician. 75K from Beasley is chump change. It is comical to professionals to watch you Montgomery wannabe’s defend this charade. Bright is not trusted by anyone in Montgomery. Beasley hosting an event for him is simple downtown development payback. I guess Perkins and Kennedy will have their daycare center payback event later. Bright has as much business being in congress as Don Siegelman and Nick Bailey getting blessed by the Pope.

During the April 29th Debate Bright came off a bit pretentious and kind of dull to me. “I have been promised things from people very high up if I am elected” turned me off in a huge way. I don’t like the idea of secrets you don’t think the voters deserve to know. His twice used argument “It will be a Democratic Majority so vote for me” makes sense – after all, the only thing a Republican is going to be able to do in 2009 is vote “Nay” in protest (interestingly, John Martin(R) made this his entire platform with his closing speech: “I will not work with Democrats! Never!”) – but still, I’d rather a candidate that was at least a little inspiring, and “Vote for the majority” just isn’t that exciting of an argument.

I guess you have to take what you can get.

Publius, your vitriol is laughable in its obviousness.

Can you come up with anything positive to say, or do you just hate Democrats so much your blinding rage gets in the way of being rational?

Also, isn’t $75K more than Jay or Harri Anne raised in the first 3 months of being in the race?

Publius is definitely a “the world is crumbling around me” type person. Best part though is everyone who read his posts are very well aware of that. Always negative on Bright or anyone else that is proactive and desires change. He is bitter in his outlook in general! Anyone who pays attention to his posts can see that he is abrasive, beligerant, argumentative, even to himself and fights with every single issue! Need to get with the program cause change is whats happening,,,,

Real talk, why don’t you go check this little thing called an FEC report. Smith raised a boatload of money last quarter and I am curious if she was able to keep up the momentum. Love had a lackluster report last time, but also keep in mind the Republicans have a crowded field. Democrats on the other side have an unknown dentist and a Liberal Nutjob running against the mayor of the Capitol City, he should be raising money hand over fist (especially with help from his friend Rahm and Steny).

Love did poorly again. Only raised $84K, then put in another $49K of his own. Wondering how Smith and Woods did.

Be Careful What You Ask For

Alabama just finished one of the bizarre primary election cycles in recent memory. I mean really, who would have ever thought 12 months ago that Ron Sparks and Robert Bentley would have been facing off against one another for the big prize? Both men are personal friends but I think even they had to [...]

Regardless of Political Stripes Vote Tomorrow

As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices. Call me a political junkie, but I am fascinated by the whole electoral process—what age group votes most often, what issues motivate them and what media outlet is the most effective. While all of my interest in the political world is a hobby [...]

TRYIN’ TO CATCH UP

I’ve been in Venice on a little vacation and just returned last night.  I’ve been trying to catch up and see that there have been few dramatic events in the last 10 days.  I thought the www.fivethirtyeight.com piece was especially good, though the comments reflected the anti-Alabama knee-jerk reactions of those who live outside the [...]
