Follow-up to Grimes’ Comments
Regarding the post in which Rep. David Grimes recounted an exchange on the House floor with House Minority Leader Mike Hubbard relating to a filibuster over HB350, Rep. Hubbard states that there was no “conversation.” “I [Hubbard] just asked him if his light was on. He said ‘yes’ and I said ‘OK.’”
Alabama GOP Communications Director Philip Bryan is also clear that the state GOP and Mike Hubbard as state party chair will absolutely not support any particular candidate over another in a GOP primary and look forward to supporting enthusiastically their primary winners in the general election.
Check back here for any update as I will offer Rep. Grimes the opportunity to comment.

Philip Bryan we are not all idiots out here. Who did Mike Hubbard let sit in his chair at the Governor’s State of the State address - Jay Love. Who was the only representative allowed to fly with the Governor when he held press conferences at a lot of the Wal-Marts around the state - Jay Love. Whose political bumper sticker does Mike Hubbard’s personal secretary (who works for the Republican party and should remain neutral) have on her car - Jay Love. Who gets the gravy bills handed to him from Hubbard and the Governor to sponsor - Jay Love. Who was Hubbard trying to promote last Thursday when he sacrificed the business interests in trying to end the filibuster - Jay Love. How many people have told Hubbard he shouldn’t favor Jay Love and Hubbard’s response is “Well he is my friend”. Mikey, you should be neutral and you know you are not. SHAME ON YOU. And shame on the republicans if they do not get rid of you as their leader.

Danny - I would like you to comment on this, becaue I think you know that there has been an absolute, none-too-subtle attempt to hand-pick GOP candidates. It got truly ofensive when a man who entered politics as a demo-in-republican clothes (Jay Love), a man who was a plant in the GOP primary to knock off rock-ribbed conservative Bob McKee, became the party’s “official” choice in House district 2. This is outrageous. Mike Hubbard should be forced to resign. I would say his actions are unprecedented, but Danny you know that Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh also actively supported certain candidates when she was GOP chair as well. It is a travesty.
Danny, I really would like to hear your take on this, as i regard you as a balanced observer.

So it comes to this - the fraud that is Jay Love begins to implode. Dax, did you not think that when you made an out-an-out lie the theme of your campaign (Jay has NEVER repeat NEVER passed a tax cut and you can look that up - though he has sure voted FOR plenty of TAX HIKES)that people would have the sense to say “Wait a minute - that is NOT TRUE!”?
Dax, these are not “fudgeable” things . . .Jay did NOT pass a tax cut, but you claim that every day. That is DISHONEST. PERIOD. END OF SENTENCE. END OF ROAD.
TRUTH IS JAY LOVE’S PROBLEM. He lied to his district to get elected. He is lying now. Thank God we know about his repeated lies so he can’t join the Liar’s Convention in Washington - although he would be right at home there . . .

Fact 1) The filibuster against big tax-hiking HB 350 (sponsored by uberliberal Richard lindsey) ended when Jay Love backer Mike Hubbard said so
Fact 2) Jay Love’s bill came out of Richard Lindsey’s committee immediately after the filibuster-ending deal was made
CONCLUSION: CORRUPT BARGAIN
Fact 3) From now on, the huge Tax-Hiking HB350 shall be known as the JAY LOVE TAX-HIKE BILL.

For those who say Jay Love didn’t cut taxes, you might want to convince Bob Riley. Back in 2006, well before Everett announced he wasn’t running, Riley singled out Love for his role in passing the tax cut:
“The Governor singled out Representatives John Knight and Jay Love, a Democrat and a Republican, for helping to forge a bipartisan consensus on a tax cut bill. He also praised advocacy organizations and members of his Cabinet who worked with legislators on the measure.”
http://www.governorpress.alabama.gov/pr/pr-2006-04-12-01-tax-cut-photo.asp
Riley also recognized Jay, and John Knight, during his 2008 State of the State Address back in February for his role in helping cut taxes:
“All of these new jobs are making a real difference in the lives of our citizens. As people in other states wring their hands and endure sleepless nights wondering if their job will be there next month, Alabama’s economy has remained the envy of our region. Personal incomes are rising at a rate faster than any other Southern state. Our unemployment rate reached its lowest level in history. And finally Alabama stopped taxing its poorest families at the highest rate in the nation. I want to thank Representative John Knight and Representative Jay Love for working with a bipartisan coalition to give our working families the first tax relief in the history of our state.”

Comment by Check the Record — April 30, 2008 @ 11:36 am
Your post is garbage. Ask John Knight - I did.. It was HIS bill, not Jay’s. Jay has passed one bill - a payout to union members of taxpayer money. You are not telling the truth, which is common with Jay Love and his supporters (see the article that started this thread).
THAT is the RECORD. In black and white and indisputable.
Comment by I did check the record — April 30, 2008 @ 11:46 am
The record also shows nine separate “yes” votes by Jay Love for the biggest tax hike in US history. And now Jay Isuzu is helping pass the iimmense tax hike of HB 350 - the Jay Love Tax Hike Act of 2008 - to further his own political ambitions.
That is the RECORD also.
Comment by I did check the record — April 30, 2008 @ 11:49 am
The record shows that the tax cut bill was sponsored by John Knight. Most neutral observers would concede that Jay Love is claiming more responsibility for the bill than he is due. As David Grimes stated, he had every bit as much to do with the bill as Love. Love’s claim is misleading at best, and he built his whole campaign around it. That says volumes about Love’s actual record. You can check that, by the way.
The close ties of the Governor’s political advisors to the Love campaign - and the close ties between Mike Hubbard, the Governor, and those advisors - suggest that Love has been given unfair advantages during this campaign. The GOP should closely examine this instance of apparent interference in a party primary by the chairman. And the party should also examine other cases of similar nature involving past chairman Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh.
It is simply wrong for party officials to actively campaign and work for candidates during the primary. And there is very little doubt that is happening with the Love campaign. He should be rejected along with the politics he represents.
Comment by Actual record — April 30, 2008 @ 11:56 am
I detect a pattern here with Love. He inflates his credentials. He does not tell you that he supported the tax cut bill, just as Grimes did. He claims full responsibility for it, far in excess of his actual contribution. If you watch his commercials, you would certainly assume it was his bill, which it clearly was not. I think Love has a problem with the truth, going back to his campaign against Bob McKee; his ads in that campaign were undeniably dishonest. He has some of the earmarks of a pathological liar.
Comment by Freud — April 30, 2008 @ 12:08 pm
Danny - I wonder if hysterical laughter erupted as soon as Phillip Bryan made that absolutely ridiculous statement; laughter from ther media, from the GOP staffers who heard it, and from Bryan himself as he tried to keep a staright face . . . .

It just hit me! Mike Hubbard considers himself a SUPER DELEGATE. We are too stupid to pick our own candidate for the general election. So he has taken it upon himself to choose one for us. I thought only the Dems were arrogant enough to do that!!!
Comment by Big Al — April 30, 2008 @ 1:19 pm
You are on to something, Big Al. And look what a great job Mike Hubbard is doing in hand-picking candidates: a RINO like Jay Love (who took away the most reliably conservative vote in the legislature in Bob McKee) and thuddingly unqualified Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh for the PSC presidency . . .I think us Republican voters do a lot better job picking candidates than Little Mikey . . .
Comment by Right On! — April 30, 2008 @ 1:25 pm
You can’t forget about the Randy McKinney debacle. That is why they are pushing Jay, but not openly. We saw how that one blew up in their faces as will this one.
Comment by Earning their money — April 30, 2008 @ 1:27 pm
How much more open can they be about their support???? Mike Hubbard needs to be held accountable by the party. And maybe he should answer some question about the financial shape that another hand-picked candidate - Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh - left the party in . . .
Comment by Right On! — April 30, 2008 @ 1:36 pm
Why was Jay Love picked??? He was certainly not the most conservative or the one with the most outstanding record. To the contrary, a lot of people in the party knew about Jay’s close connections to the unions and his questionable support in past elections. Why didn’t the party insiders push a better candidate??????
Comment by Question for the forum — April 30, 2008 @ 1:38 pm
Jay and Mikey are part of the millionaires club. Probably the only two they care about. If they got any closer while in session, they would have to sit on top of each other. That is why Hubbard is pushing Love. No other reason. It certainly can’t be because of his record or personal reputation. They are part of the mutual admiration society.

It is time we take our party back one that is for less government, no taxes, FAIR tax base, no abortion, Family Values (not country club views)and small businessmen and farmers !!
David Grime is the only one that is not a multi millionaire!!! Jay Love is so fake!!! He does not even need to be on the ticket.
Mike Hubbard Millionaire
Jay Love Millionaire
Bob Riley Millionaire
Twinkle Cavanaugh Wants to be Millionaire
Billy Carnary Millionaire

Most of the people in the trenches of the republican party, the ones who work in local levels, grass roots wants good government less of it. That is why we are republicans.
I apologize for such a long reply but I am from the country and just wanted to defend some of us Country Republicans verses the Country Club Republicans. We are tired of it and I think you are going to see the difference in some of these up coming elections.

i’ll pose it a different way: whether or not the secretary of whom you speak still has the bumper sticker on car, i challenge you to show me that the secretary works for or is on the payroll for the republican party. i’ll answer for you, she doesn’t. therefore both of you are spreading false statements without facts.
Comment by Big Al may be an idiot — April 30, 2008 @ 5:57 pm
Touch a nerve did we? What about all the false statements you are putting out for your buddy Jay Love. You obviously cannot dispute anything said about Hubbard. And by #21, at least one other person saw the vehicle.

the secretary is not employed by the party she is employed by the caucus. If she is on the house floor then she is an employee of the caucus/house thus mikey/love combo.
you sound too rich for me but get ready we are coming through the party and we will take it back. We have won several races in the last couple of elections against the URR and we will continue.

To ‘Come On!’ in comment 3,
I don’t particularly have anything to add. I think the party is smart to stay out of the primaries in any official capacity. They want to have a good working relationship with the primary winner, and that’s harder to do if that winner feels like the party was supporting a primary opponent.
I don’t know enough to have a basis for saying the state GOP wants Love to win the CD-2 primary. Grimes seems to think Hubbard is playing favorites. Apparently Hubbard and Love are friends, and that’s a tricky line to walk for Hubbard. Anyone naturally wants to be helpful to their friends, but Hubbard and the party don’t want to commit any party resources toward giving Love or anyone else an edge over the others.
BTW, on the issue of the secretary with a “Jay Love” sticker… let’s say she wanted to have a bumper sticker for your candidate on her car, but Hubbard insisted that she couldn’t. It’s not difficult to imagine that some would complain that Hubbard was dictating what an employee could and couldn’t do in her private life when she isn’t even a party official.
I am really more of a fascinated observer than anything else. I am sure that if there is something worthwhile to be said about it, folks with weightier opinions will jump in.

Any truth to the rumor that Harri Anne was Roger Bedford’s campaign manager in Geneva County in his run against Jeff Sessions in 1996 for the US Senate? I’ve heard that but I can not confirm?
What do Jay and Harri Anne do for a living?
Comment by Amazed — May 1, 2008 @ 1:23 pm
Harri Anne is a VP of her family’s bank in Slocumb. The family has had the bank for years. Jay’s dad set him up with several Subway franchises that he has since sold and now he into real estate development.

No truth to that at all. That is such a blatant lie that not even Jay Love would tell it.
Comment by Harri Anne and Bedford-Lie — May 1, 2008 @ 5:15 pm
Jay Love and his supporters are really going over the top in lying in this campaign so it is good to know they are now lying again with this Bedford thing. Apparently they think that it works, but hey - lying on a monumental scale worrked for Jay in 2002.
By the way, John Knight called Jay a liar on the floor of the House on Wednesday - on the record.

I bet John Knight voted FOR the double dipping bill?

Yep - Knight is a Democrat. But he is exactly right about Lyin’ Love, Jay Isuzu himself . . .
Speaking of raising taxes, though, that’s something John Knight and Jay Love can agree on - just like Love agreed with Knight on 9 separate huge tax hike votes in 2003 . . .

I challenge anyone who doesn’t believe Love is a liar and will stoop to anything to further his ambitions to call Bob Mckee, or anyone with direct knowledge, and ask him about the ad that ran the day before their election. It was a blatant lie. When asked about it later, Lovey Boy said “Well that’s politics.” Well it is not just politics Lovey Boy, who tarnished a good man’s character (of which you have none).
