Filed under: Campaign & Election, AL Executive Branch — Danny @ 5:52 pm

Tim JamesFormer Congressman Sonny Callahan of Mobile has agreed to be Tim James’s State Campaign Chair for the 2010 Alabama gubernatorial campaign, a source close to James tells the Parlor.

Callahan represented the 1st Congressional District as a Republican for 18 years beginning with his election in 1984. He did not run in 2002 and was succeeded by Republican Jo Bonner.

  1. I guess if he wins, Sonny picks all the cabinet members.

When he loses in the primary, Sonny can pile on with the Repub nominee.

And when Folsom’s Governor, he’ll be shut out either way.

  2. Oh goody. I’ve seen a van in carpool line for years now with a James for Governor bumper sticker. Guess the driver won’t have to get a new one.

  3. It is a fool who dismisses the candidacy of someone with around $50 million who has hired a campaign ad man who worked for George W. Bush and Arnold the Governator . . .

Tim James will be formidable. He has the money and he is an incredibly powerful presnce on the stump. And he won’t be getting in late. I will tell you this - in a matched debate setting with Bradley Byrne and Jack Hawkins, he will murder them.

  4. Tim James, unlike most of the current crop of Republicans, is an idealogue, really has some convictions about limited government. I voted for Tim James in 2002 and will likely do so in 2010.

  5. Don’t count out Jack Hawkins. But I do really like Tim James as well. Two smart, progressive men that will make Folsom look like the bumbling fool he is. People in this state have a short memory if they really want jim folsom back in the governor’s chair.

  6. I’m a Democrat, but I’ve said all along that it is foolish to count out anyone with high name ID and bucketloads of cash.

  7. I doubt Tim James name ID is any higher than the other Repubs looking to run.

  8. I think there very well may be a poll out there - and in important people’s hands - that says James does have better name ID than almost all other Repubs looking to run, BlueDog.

  9. Agreed that James does have more name ID than any of the other republicans mentioned. and yes, he has buckets of cash to spend. i would say he is in a good position…

  10. I haven’t seen any polls, but I would bet Troy King is the only potential GOPer with higher name ID. Byrne might be close because he’s been in the papers so much lately.

  11. troy King could not win. he has all he can handle as it is. But I agree on his name ID.

  12. Lord all Jim needs to do is run Tim W. James ads–

    W ruined it for sons

Wait–Jim is a son of a guv too

    o well

  13. I think the following potential GOP gov candidates would start with higher name ID than Tim James:

    Troy King
    Bradley Byrne
    Luther Strange
    Kay Ivey
    Any Repub Congressman
    Mike Hubbard
    Tony Petelos

Tim James is the unknown son of a forgotten governor. That’s why he couldn’t break into double digits in 2002. If he drops $2M on tv, then he’s a known figure, but as of now he’s a nobody.

  14. Blue Dog, I don’t have a dog in the GOP fight; I wish they could somehow all lose. I just think nobody on that side of the fence should dismiss a two-term governor’s son with money to burn.

  15. he could spend 10 million and not even feel it. depends on how committed he is to the race…financially especially.
