Sunset in the House

Filed under: Legislative Dispatch Rep. Cam Ward @ 8:05 pm

I know I will make some people unhappy by saying this but I really think Sunset legislation is the most boring thing we deal with in the Alabama Legislature. I have never heard of an agency being sunset before and there is never a discussion to do so. While I am not advocating the abolishment of any particular agency I do find the debate on these topics to be a little dry to put it mildly. Below is the special order calendar to be debated in the House tomorrow:

  1. I’ll second that Cam. I almost fell asleep waiting for some interesting debate last Wednesday. Luckily HB339 and the unreal debate surrounding it woke me up FAST!

I just gotta ask…how are members selected for the Sunset committee? Do newbie legislators and those who perhaps need to be punished automatically get assigned? Does anyone actually volunteer for those slots?

  2. At the risk of offending two of my good friends on sunset Reps. Jim McClendon and Howard Sanderford I will try my best to answer you Loretta. The House and Senate both elect members to serve on Sunset. I am not sure how they do it in the Senate but in the House two members of each caucus serve on Sunset- the Black Caucus gets two members, Democrat Caucus gets two and the Republican Caucus gets two members. You actually run to get elected to serve on this committee from your caucus then the entire House approves the selection by individual caucuses. This system is in place in the House primarily because the Speaker is so fair. In theory the entire House could just vote on all six House members and they would most likely be all Democrats. Not something I have ever been interested in serving on but I know Howard Sanderford from Huntsville really enjoys the job.
