Scrushy Deemed a Flight Risk

Though The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals today ruled that former governor Don Siegelman is to be released from prision on bond pending his appeal, it also today denied Richard Scrushy’s request for release (pdf).

Scrushy has not demonstrated by clear and convincing evidence that he is unlikely to flee if he is released pending appeal. Scrushy’s motion for reconsideration is, accordingly,
        DENIED

HealthSouth founder Richard Scrushy was convicted with Siegelman in June 2006.

  • [...] The court denied Richard Scrushy’s request for release. His attorney had no details, but I’d guess he’s considered a flight risk. He certainly has the financial wherewithal to take off for parts unknown, and his unscheduled yacht cruise last year didn’t win him any points with the Feds.  [UPDATE:  Danny confirms my guess here.] I’m glad Siegelman is being released. He’s no danger to society, and I can’t see him running. It’s a waste of taxpayers’ money to keep him in prison while his conviction is appealed. [...]

  • If Scrushy is willing to put up all of his assets as colaterral (i hate double letters, way too hard to spell), how is he a flight risk?

  • Well at least some justice was done yesterday.

That’s easy. He’s pledging the assets the government KNOWS about. Scrushy is a very smart man so I’m sure he has heard of Asset Protection before. Not to mention the amount of money he’s funneled to his cronies.

Senate Passes Ban on No-Bid Contracts–Makes State Government More Accountable

I am very pleased that Senate Republicans joined with the Senate Democratic Caucus this week to pass a major piece of our legislative agenda.  SB 52, sponsored by Senator Lowell Barron, will end the abuse that we have seen of the awarding of no-bid contracts.  During Governor Riley’s seven years in office, he has awarded [...]

Working in the Bubble

I often hear a lot of talk about the bubble of Montgomery. From time to time I am reminded about this and it could never be more glaring than the current debate regarding gambling. As the news media and political ads have taken to the air debating Governor Riley’s raid on Victory Land and Country [...]

HAPPY FEBRUARY

Under the “B” … June 1

I’ve tried to follow BINGO rules and BINGO raids.  I’m not sure I understand the law, nor do I get the motives of many of the principal players.  I bet many of you know a heck of a lot more about this than I.  But one thing I am [...]
