Filed under: Campaign & Election, AL and DC — Danny @ 3:59 pm

Republican state Sen. Harri Anne Smith had over 300 in attendance last night at a Dothan fundraiser that raised over $230,000 for her Congressional campaign, according to a release from her campaign. For those interested, the list of the Host Committee is below.

  2. Yawn? If her main competitor is Jay Love and he only raised around $60k at his kick-off fundraiser, this should say something. The was actually more money than VP Cheney and Riley raised at $5000/couple in Dothan. I’d say that’s pretty impressive for Harri Anne!

  3. Yawn….stretch…Yawn. Wake me up when these folks have to write another check for the person that actually wins the Republican nomination.

  4. Let’s compare the checks to the host committee — same with Jay Love.

  5. Smith has always had an impressive fundraising abiity. Remember the 1998 Senate race? I think her and Bright (with the DCCC’s help) will be the top-fundraisers.

  6. I can assure you Harri Anne will not be the top fundraiser on the GOP side.

  7. The $230,000 that Smith raised would actually pay off Jay love’s $230,000 DEBT.

I can tell you one thing - people who actually write checks like Harri Anne a LOT more than Jay Love, and that is usually the way to bet in political elections.

I doubt Love is yawning, GOPer. He needs to be over at Wal-Mart getting an orange vest so he can work on paying his huge campaign debt . . . apparently GOP donors have zero faith in his ability to snag the nomination.

  8. I can’t say if Harri Anne will be the top fundraiser. But I can say with asbsolute confidence it won ‘t be Red Ink Rino Jay Love.

  9. The names on Hari Anne’s list make Jay Love’s look very bush league. Did you notice Wallace Malone on there? And look at all the Wiregrass legislators. Impressive list. She seems to have solidified the Wiregrass behind her. She should make the runoff with ease. Now it will depend on who makes the runoff from Montgomery . . . .

  10. “Anonymous” , how bold of you to actually state a name, even a made up one. Typical of a Harri Anne Smith blind faith supporter. Impressive that legislators were listed as honorary hosts at a fundraiser? That is common courtesy and protocol. And some of them listed are far from influential. And secondly, wait until the next FEC filings are made before you start spouting off about how much Harri Anne Smith has raised compared to others. It is intersting that she feels the need to broadcast her fundraisers publicly while others just go about doing there business.

  11. Come on GOPer - get real. If you want to point fingers about “spouting off” about fundraising numbers, Jay Love publicly put out a claim on this very board of “raising $370,000″ when he had in fact raised only $69,000 (and his FEC reports - since you bring those up - show him to be a whopping $230,000 IN DEBT on his campaign).

There is practically zero doubt that Smith is raising multiples of the amount of money that Love is. Perhaps Grimes or David Woods will be competitive in money raising - it certainly looks like Jay won’t unless Jay has a liberal special interest lined up to pay his debts (and of course, he HAS used that tact before).

And what excatly do you mean by “made up name???” Wallace Malone - who is woth approximately $300 million BTW - is right there on the host committee. Why do you say he is “made up?” Only Jay Love’s outrageous claim of being a Republican is “made up.”

  12. Can you not read? Made up in terms of your anonymous name instead of at least making one up. FEC reports are only updated once a quarter - you have no clue what Jay or anyone else has raised. Have a good day Harri Anne’s mouthpiece…

  13. All of this talk about Harri Anne Smith being so righteous. She missed the vote against the PAC bill that Lowell and the Democrats were trying to shove down the Republicans throats on Tuesday so she could hold a fundraiser. The most important vote to date and she missed it. Also, it only takes a few minutes looking to see that Miss Smith is by no means clean on the issue of contributions. She took her fair share from AEA and others.

  14. Thank you, hmmmm and GOPer. There are always a bunch of harri anne kool aid drinkers on here thinking she can do know wrong. They should get their head out of the sand, or atleast out of dothan or geneva. Where is pookie when you need him?

  15. “Where is Pookie when you need him?” Here I am! I am sorry… I was working on another issue. That “Double Dipper” with a “no work” 2- year collage job –Terry Spicer [D] Elba!]–

Harri Anne, is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Honest, hard working, and approachable. She has never embarrassed the people of the wiregrass. And she is not collecting “two” taxpayer pay- checks. She not only voted against the excessive 62% pay increase, she didn’t accept it. That’s being a good and honest public servant. The Wiregrass voters [and voters of rural counties around Montgomery in the district] will throw their support behind her, since she would best represent the military, and agricultural interests of the area.

Paul Hubbert did not give Jay Love $10,000 as a newcomer running against a 24-year respected conservative GOP stalwart [Bob McKee] because Jay was going to vote against AEA. Given Hubbert’s acclaimed propensity to control pliable legislators is it any wonder that –Jay Love is a loyal Hubbert acolyte?– Jay Love, served a purpose for Hubbert… it got rid of a Republican [Bob McKee] he did not “OWN!” This is what Hubbert does in Republican districts where a Democrat can’t win. Our 140 state legislators wield a tremendous amount of power by virtue of our current governing document. Many of them use that power to help others, but some use it to help themselves as well as the “special interests” to which they are beholden. Harri Anne did not “solicit” a AEA contribution!

I am a nobody, yet Harri Anne went out of her way to help my family during a financial hardship, after my father passed away a few months ago. Believe me I have nothing to offer her but my support. What she did for my family was out of the goodness of her heart. My family farms the only thing that my family can do for her is put a basket of tomatoes on her front porch from time to time.

  16. That last post by “pookie” is exactly what I mean by the Harri Anne fanatics. It’s ridiculous. The real pookie didn’t post that…he has a last name that is always used for one thing. You guys can’t see the forest for the trees and believe that district 2 is comprised of Geneva and Houston counties. She counts on those counties while others running are raising money and support in the remaining 14 counties. Go figure!

    Comment by BWils — February 28, 2008 @ 8:37 pm

  17. Wow. God forbid any of us support Senator Smith, we must all be ignorant recluses from Geneva or Houston County. I mean, forget that there’s David Grimes, David Woods, and Craig Schmidtke in the race as well. It’s obviously Love vs. Smith, even though most people in the district have no idea who they will vote for.

And what exactly makes Harri Anne Smith’s backers “blind-faith supporters”? I’m guessing that the fact we base our support for her around the fact that we think she will be a good fit for the district and that she was ranked the most conservative member of the State Senate aren’t valid enough reasons.

I think this race is wide open, and not only between Smith and Love. So before you begin attacking us “Harri Anne fanatics”, why don’t those of you in love with Love wake up and realize that the real goal here is to not lose this seat to Bobby Bright and the Democrats. This divisive stuff is inevitable, but let’s leave it up to the candidates. Harri Anne Smith, Jay Love, or whoever the GOP nominee will need a unified party to go up against Bright and the DCCC.

  18. Good comment Terry. I agree. I must say, you are one of the few on here that has not turned Smith’s fundraiser into a coronation. I don’t back either Love or Smith yet…but I agree one of them is likely to win. And when it comes down to it you are correct - the main goal, from my standpoint as a Republican, is to keep Bright out of Congress.

  19. The really interesting thing is the panic that has gripped Love’s consultant GOPer since he saw the fundraiser numbers for Smith. He seems to be in a conniption fit over it.

  20. Post 19, you are just as bad as GOPer. You are as rabid for Harri Anne just as he is against her.
