Bright Expected to Announce for AL-02 in Dale County

Alabama's 2nd Congressional DistrictMontgomery Mayor Bobby Bright is expected to announce his candidacy as a Democrat for the 2nd Congressional District at the Dale County Courthouse. A reader wrote that “Bobby Bright may announce his candidacy for Congress in Dale County at the Courthouse any day now,” and someone who works at the Dale County Courthouse confirmed that Democrats had received permission to make such an announcement at the courthouse. The date is not known.

Bright has family roots in Dale County and undoubtedly would like to establish publicly his ties to the Wiregrass in an election that is seen to be, in part, a geographic clash of Montgomery-area vs. the Wiregrass.

I am extremely proud to see that Mayor Bright is officially announcing his intention to run for the 02 Congressional vacancy. He would make a very effective and strong Representative for this district. Now, let’s get involved and get him elected as our Representative in Congress!

  • Jaker

Bright is a good candidate for the dems…but he will lose.

  • Montgomery

These comments are very similar to those made about Obama early on before he starting working on Hillary. We seem to have a lot of political experts. I would remind you all many of these same people years ago did not give Terry Everett a chance in hell of winning. Yes I know the big rub here is a repub vs a dem for the district but in this game you are always one “Larry Craig” incident away from the whole ballgame changing. You can’t rule anyone out at this point. Let the games begin!

  • walt moffett

Then there’s an article in today’s Montgomery Advertiser saying he has made a decision but won’t tell.

  • GOPer

It will be a good race. I just hope Harri Anne smith is not the Republican nominee. If so, Bright has an excellent chance of winning in November. Sad but true.

  • Nope

Goper, your reasoning does not hold water. Harri Anne would be much stronger than Love or Grimes. She doesn’t share Bright’s base in votes AND money like Rino Jay and Grimes. Love and Grimes won’t be able to raise money in Montgomery against a sitting Montgomery mayor.

  • GOPer

You’re wrong Nope. believe me, there are plenty of folks that will give to a rep. over a dem regardless of him being mayor. money will not be an issue in this race as both sides will be able to raise. in terms of a base of votes, all that is thrown out the window in the general election. all of what you said would be true if bright was in the primary race as a republican. but because he is not, your comments fall flat.

  • Nope

You don’t understand, GOPer. The mayor of Montgomery controls city contracts – those people will NOT give money to a possible opponent of a sitting mayor. Bright knows this as does Emory Folmar. It is a fact of life in Montgomery. And it won’t matter if it is in the primary – Bright learned from Emory to read those reports. The city contractors – and those who WISH to have contracts and inflence in Montgomery – won’t contribute to Love or Grimes; notice how the simple SPECULATION that Bright may run has kept the “big dogs” out of Love’s coffers so far? No Aronovs, no Blounts, no big money?

  • GOPer

Wishful thinking Nope. Even if some folks in Mgm are hesitant, those in the wiregrass could care less about Bright in Montgomery. What makes you think they will not support, financially, a Montgomery candidate in the general? That was your whole premise…that a Montgomery candidate would not have as much support. Believe me, they will ahve plenty of support come the general election if they win the primary.

  • Nope

GOPer you still miss the point. Every person who gives a dime to Rino Love or Grimes will have Bobby Bright looking at their FEC contributions and knowing about it and YES it IS affecting how much Love and Grimes are raising – you think Bobby Bright will only be able to raise $60K? He’ll get $250,000 at his first fundraiser, and Harri Anne Smith will probably do that well also since she is raising her money OUTSIDE the range of Bright’s power base.

No one doing serious business in Montgomery wants to take CHANCE ONE with a sitting mayor – even in the primary. Bright’s memory is as good as Emory’s about who gives what, and Bright won’t like it if a big-money Montgomery type gives money to ANY opponent at ANY time – the same way that Emory would have taken note. That has been a political fact of life in Montgomery since Emory Folmar perfected the art of donor intimidation in this city. If you don’t know that GOPer you have no working knowledge of Montgomery politics.

The proof is in Love’s FEC report. There is NOT ONE contractor with the city of Montgomery on it, and NOT ONE true power player on it either.
