To win any of Alabama’s 48 GOP delegates, a candidates must receive 20% of the vote in the GOP primary according to new state party rules. Romney is in that neighborhood in recent polling for the Alabama primary. If he gets 19% of the vote in the state primary, he is shut out.
And in the unlikely event that a candidate receives 50% of the vote in the state’s GOP primary, that candidate will get all the delegates. John McCain has polled as high as 40% in recent days.
Despite earlier reports to the contrary, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will not appear in Birmingham today.
