OK I admit it, I was wrong. I was one of the legislators who originally opposed the new primary election date in Alabama. I was convinced that every other state would just move their state up earlier and we would never get any attention. I eventually voted for the bill but I still thought it would never work. That statement almost sounds John Kerryish I better be careful, but I digress.
This presidential election has been fun in Alabama and not just for me but for a lot of my friends in politics. I have been active with the John McCain for President campaign as his State Legislative Chairman. It has been a real roller coaster ride. Going from on top to a death watch to being on top again. Like most people in Alabama I have had the most fun just going to rallies and seeing some presidential campaigns pay attention to Alabama.
Last week while I was on the road helping a McCain surrogate in Alabama I ran in to my good friend Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin who has been actively campaigning for Mike Huckabee. She was tired as well but you could tell she was enjoying the chance to be able to help her favorite candidate with some one on one help. This same story could be told over and over. Two weeks ago I ran into Rep. Merika Coleman who was working hard for the Obama campaign in Alabama after they had opened their new headquarters and just today I received another blast e-mail from Treasurer Kay Ivey extolling the virtues of Mitt Romney. Everybody seems to be in on the action. Rep. Mike Ball, my good friend in the legislature, just endorsed Mitt Romney last week and was soon swarmed with all the online Ron Paul supporter. In the end we don’t all agree on particular candidates but we still find to time to enjoy the politics of it all.
Regardless of who you vote for and I can truly say my friends are all over the board, if you are a political junkie like me, take the time to enjoy all of this national attention Alabama is getting. After Tuesday a lot of the fun will be over with.

Like the wise man said, when its not fun any more, its time to hang up the cleats.
Besides wearing comfortable shoes, any road warrior/stumping tips you’d care to pass along? Carry an extra button or three? Use a good hand lotion and purell?
I have to tell you Walt I think it is a lot of fun even when my candidate is losing. I like watching everyone get involved and passionate about at least someone in the race and then go out and work for them. That is what it is all about.
I took my eight-year-old niece to see Mike Huckabee Saturday – she enjoyed the rally and said it was “better than social studies class”, plus it gives her material for their ‘Morning Meeting’ (what I used to call ’show and tell’).
BTW, she started her politicking by delivering yard signs and canvassing for Bob Riley.
