State Rep in ‘Physical Altercation’
Rep. Spencer Collier (R - Irvington) was involved in a fight (or as the police report calls it, “a physical altercation”) in a parking lot on the Faulkner State Community College campus in Bay Minette Wednesday. WKRG-TV has the news on its web site including a video report and a copy of the police report.
Despite the news video report saying, “Bay Minette Police Chief Michael Michael Rowland says Collier staggered into the police department lobby and wanted to file a complaint,” neither party actually filed charges.
What the news doesn’t tell you… During the fight, the other man bit Collier’s ear so severely that it needed to be re-attached. One version of the story has it that the men were rolling around in the parking lot and that the ear was bitten off, but a source close to the incident on campus told the Parlor that the ear was not completely severed. The campus source’s understanding was that the ear was re-attached with glue.
Put this one in the ohmigosh category.

Further embarrassment from the legislature and its cast of characters.

As a Republican, undoubtedly he was “Fighting For the Integrity of The Two Year College System.”
Either that or waiting behind a dumpster to ask some dude if he “wanted to party.”

Re-attached with glue???? Good grief.

Come on now, why don’t you check out the story behind the ear because there is no brain behind it. Maybe the other man’s daughter was done wrong by Spencer’s son. Maybe her life is forever altered by that of a selfish young man that is constantly sheltered by his father. If you have a daughter and you knew the story then there you would have it, the ear would not be that important. Seems to me that if you focused on the victim here Spencer would not be so pityful and pathetic in the eyes of the public.
Comment by Sickofit — February 1, 2008 @ 1:48 pm
Correction he would be pathetic.

MAYBE sickofit you don’t know what you are talking about. MAYBE you just want to get others thinking that you have some inside knowledge and clearly you don’t. This was an issue of Spencer defending his son from physical harm. There is a reason why the other man did NOT press charges. And as far as his son goes, this was a presently dating, in love couple. So, no “life altering” doing someone wrong song here. Also, GLUE?? come on, his ear is just fine.
Comment by Jennylyn — February 1, 2008 @ 2:41 pm
Jennylyn yes there is a reason why the other man did not press charges but only he could answer that.
Comment by Sickofit — February 1, 2008 @ 2:56 pm
having had an ear bitten before, this is not a laughing matter (especially as cold as its been). however, if the beginning of this year is any indication of things to come, it’s going to be fun. buckle up danny and quit your day job.

Will this limit his ability, as a legislator, to participate in hearings?

And what hearings would it affect, #16? The ones on EARmarking, perhaps?

Thats funny ….I have met Rep. Collier before …he seems pretty stout - wasn’t he a state trooper ? We need him back on the force to kick some butt out there !Its going to be a great session !
Comment by Pike Rd. Momma — February 1, 2008 @ 4:33 pm
Oh poor pitiful, Spencer Collier! We should feel sorry that his adult son needed his daddy’s protection!! Let your son be the man that he portrays to everyone that he is & deal with his own problems & by the way….your son lied to you & caused you to act like a fool! Guess you have figured that one out now!!! I hope your threats to Mr. Wheat, that have caused him not to press charges against you, don’t backfire!! You would be in a world of hurt!!

Jennylynn, if you knew the real story you would know that “love” is not what is keeping this couple together. This relationship for this young lady has definately spelled out the rest of her life for her, so yes, life-altering!!! Spencer Collier’s son is known for his abusive tendencies with females….why is he so defensless when it comes to altercation’s with men. Jennylynn, you must be his mommy because the only female that i know of that supports this particular Collier is his mommy!I hope she knows, she created a monster! Thanks alot!

Comment by billy ray hays — February 1, 2008 @ 5:10 pm
I’ve been appalled at some of the comments on here, especially #6, #24, #26. Spencer Collier was a man of the law before coming to the State House and we need to keep him in our prayers during this time. Those of you thinking it’s cute to make ear-related jokes and speculate as to the reason of the fight need to take a step back and consider what you’re saying.
Comment by Terry — February 1, 2008 @ 5:36 pm
I’m appalled at you, Terry, for speculating that we are speculating about the reason of the fight. You should consider what you are saying & whom you are defending….a man of the law…yes, but he also took advantage of that position. He does need praying for like everyone, including me for gossiping about this man, but sometimes, you just have to spill it! Let’s all pray for his secretary & hope she gets to keep her Mercedes! What a kind & giving man of the law!
Comment by BooHooHoo — February 1, 2008 @ 5:51 pm
Terry try this.
Collier is a member of the Alabama House of Representatives. He represents the people of this state and those of District 105. He is also a church deacon according to his bio here:
http://www.legislature.state.al.us/house/representatives/housebios/hd105.html
No matter what his motivation was, his conduct was less than desirable for a member of the legislature.
Prayers for his ear? Really?!
How about some prayers that we get legislators who don’t resort to violence when they run out of ideas.
Comment by Expect more — February 1, 2008 @ 5:59 pm
He has no secretary, and noone has a mercedes!
Comment by Jennylyn — February 1, 2008 @ 6:03 pm
Perhaps Mr. Wheat insulted his mother. That seems adequate provocation for other Republican lawmakers.
Comment by Fo-fiver — February 1, 2008 @ 6:08 pm
Spencer had a secretary named Jamie when he was the director of the Alabama Safety Institute, that is until her husband found out and Sam made them both resign.

What is the deal with Republicans being involved in knock-down-drag-out brawls? I guess now Senator Bishop has a brawling buddy.
This story is just too unreal.

Wait, his son is 19? The press reports say that Spencer is 34. They are close enough in age to be dating the same women. Still, I am firmly against ear-biting (except for a little nibble between consenting adults).
Comment by Roy — February 2, 2008 @ 9:49 am
What a wonderful, upstanding dude to have serve in our legislature. One of his sons is a wee lad. I remember seeing him serve as a page during some Judiciary Cmte. hearings.

I am sure the Republican Party can look past all this by Spencer’s WELL noted “integrity”. Better yet, I hope they open their eyes and not ask but demand his resignation just for being himself and embarrassment to his party and his constiuents! Everything else he can deal with when he gets to the house like the rest of us.
Comment by Sickofit — February 2, 2008 @ 1:42 pm
Sickofit…seeing as how the Republican party gave Senator Bishop a standing ovation and a trophy for his violent attack on Senator Barron I’d caution you not to hold your breath in waiting for them to take action against Collier.

it was also reported that mr collier had his son and another guy pounding on mr wheat. is this true?
Comment by sickofit 2 — February 2, 2008 @ 3:34 pm
Answer to comment in #56 - the answer is NO. Wheat was the party in the wrong.
Comment by Anonymous — February 2, 2008 @ 3:50 pm
I bet Spencer Collier will not go in the next time un-opposed someone will and should run against him!
Comment by Anna Lee — February 2, 2008 @ 5:58 pm
the answer to #56 is yes yes yes to spencer, chris, and the steiner boy all three beating on mr wheat at the same time. that is the true facts. Why is everyone trying to cover this up.
Comment by Anonymous — February 2, 2008 @ 6:24 pm
mr wheat and his wife were approached by the three men and he had no chance. what a group of cowards!!!

To the individual who left the last four comments and also comment #56,
I have never appreciated any individual leaving multiple comments to make it appear that different people are having a conversation, having questions asked and answered, and so forth. That’s why any new comments you leave may go into the moderation queue to be approved before they show up here.
If you have any questions about this, you may contact me.

Gotta love the sock puppets. If the commenters here actually know the story, how about telling it instead of dropping veiled hints? And if not, how about you stop spreading innuendo?
Comment by Kathy — February 2, 2008 @ 9:02 pm
Danny, Sickofit 2 and others do not take the time to realize that their IP addresses are submitted everytime they hit that submit button and I, like yourself do not appreciate the whole two sided conversation with oneself, it diminishes the severity of the subject at hand. I do believe that people become very frustrated when they feel the truth has been covered up and act impusively, the difference between them and Rep. Collier is nothing more than “words” which can harm just as bad and do not go away anytime soon. Sickofit 2 - the truth will come in its own course, do not taint it with impulsive behavior. I respectfully request that you and others like you do not create a situation where the rest of us cannot speak our mind on this and other blogs. Slow down, take it easy and say what you have to say the first comment.
Comment by Sickofit — February 2, 2008 @ 9:32 pm
The ip numbers don’t mean anything to me, just numbers. But I take notice when I see the same ones showing up from different names. I just don’t care for people taking advantage of the anonymity offered to try to manipulate the discussions in comments.
I do understand that there are people who feel strongly about this incident, but like you said, Sickofit, there are appropriate ways to express it…
Didn’t intend to be this slow in responding to this.

Could the average Joe walk up to someone on the floor of the legislature, punch them for ANY reason, and not be arrested? Would the average Joe be able to go on public school property, or a college campus, attack someone and not be arrested? Will anything come of the officer who was ticketed for breaking the law hunting. Its disturbing to see these things in the paper and on the news week after week. Defending a womans honor, or for any other reason, we must hold the average Joe, or a Legisture, or a House Representative, or a Chief of police to the same standard. As a matter of fact they should be held to a higher standard.
