Sullivan Out at PSC
Republican Jim Sullivan announced this morning what we had heard in the Parlor earlier: he will not run for re-election as Public Service Commission President, an office he has held since 1983.
We discussed potential candidates for the position most recently here.
The Associated Press story is here.

Onthe Republican side, Lee Grant Sellers, may run. She’s very close to Kay Ivey and has worked on a lot of campaigns with her husband. She’s young and would run circles around Lucy Baxley

I hear that Susan Parker is looking to move up. She’s done a good job as an Associate, it’d be good to have her as President.

I hear Rep. Cam Ward is considering the race. From what I understand he has already hired a consultant and was rumored to have been talking with several GOP activists about the race. Not sure if he has the background for PSC though.

That’s interesting. I bet he will have a comment on here soon about this. I predict either a flat out no or a “I am flattered and am considering my options” from Representative Ward.

I hope Ed Gentle runs and Lucy just stays home.

I think Cam would be bored silly in a position like that.

Well Ward is a double dipper so maybe he’s feeling the heat. Figures he’ll have to choose between his legislative position or government job in 2010 so why not run for a political office that pays $100K+ and you only have to work once a month.

God bless the internet. It has the power to quickly start a story. No I have interest in running for the PSC. I like being in the legislature and would like to stay there at least a little bit longer but not forever.
As for Anonymous’s double dipping question well even Bambi had enemies. For six years now I have worked for a municipal corporation authority that has really been enjoyable. I think getting into the legislature after I had already been working there automatically makes you a punching bag sometimes but you just do your best and keep on going…….. and blogging.

I love how you always have the anonymous person that comes out to talk trash and run their mouth about people.

Correction…. I left out a word above. No I have NO interest in running for PSC.
Sometimes I hit the enter key too quickly!

I think Lucy will scare some people off. In a down the ballot race like PSC name ID is what people will vote on .

Regarding Sullivan’s departure — good riddance to bad rubbish.

I hear candidaie screenings will be conducted by Alabama Power Co. President Charles McCrary in the BCA offices here in Montgomery on feb 7th .

Does anyone here think that the fallout from the Mobile Press Register stories in the 2006 election had anything to do with Sullivan not seeking reelection? And does anyone think Alabama Power regrets trying to get Perry Hooper, Jr. elected by skirting the law to finance his campaign - which led to the stories that may have forced out their strong ally Sullivan at the PSC? I certainly think APCO diddn’t anticipate losing Sullivan when they made the decision to back Hooper . . .may have been some very poor political judgment there.

Tanman, interesting questions. Regarding your 1st one, I think it may have played some factor.
