David Woods in AL-02 Race

Filed under: Campaign & Election, AL and DC — Danny @ 12:21 pm

David WoodsWCOV-TV President David Woods of Montgomery is running for the GOP nomination for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional seat, he told the Parlor today. Republican incumbent Terry Everett is stepping down at the end of this term. Woods expects to announce his candidacy around January 31 after he returns from a mission trip out of the country.

In comments to the Parlor, Woods said he believes the public has an “an attitude for change.” Government is “a tax-and-spend, tax-and-spend, tax-and-spend industry,” and he believes that people are ready for a “faith-based, business-oriented, common-sense, level-headed candidate that represents prudent change.”

His opponents are “career politicians, good people, but they are part of the system and have supported tax increases.”

Alabama's 2nd Congressional DistrictWoods expects to have the “benefit of geography” because “a lot of the votes are geographical.” He grew up in the Wiregrass but now lives in the Montgomery area. “In the Wiregrass, they tend to vote for a Dothan-based candidate. And the northern part of the district over 20 years frequently votes for northern-based candidates.”

He added that he expects to have an advantage in the river region, because his television station does tremendous business in Autauga and Elmore Counties.

Woods expects the primary campaign will probably cost a half million. You have to “create name recognition, get your message across. Television time, radio, direct mail, consultants… You get to a half million quick.”

Will he be spending his own money on the campaign? “Probably. I hope not. I’m prepared to. Fundraising may be tough. Time will tell. I want the job. It’s a job…” He pauses a moment. “The skill set is conducive for the position.”

Republicans state Rep. Jay Love and state Sen. Harri Anne Smith have the highest profiles among those who have previously announced their candidacies for the position. Republican state Rep. David Grimes has announced his candidacy, but there is widespread speculation that he will drop out of the race.

This post has been updated to reflect clarifications from Mr. Woods.

Is this really what people are ready for?

  3. So, how can you be faith-based and business-oriented? And what exactly is “prudent change”? I’m sensing some kind of code words here.

  4. You can’t have faith and be a good businessman or woman? Get a life homeboy. Sorry, was that code?

  5. Prudent change means change that makes sense and is well thought out. In other words, it is not the change hillary and oboma speak of.

  6. I guess prudent change to Republicans is getting us into stupid wars, screwing up in times of natural disasters, and blowing open the budget deficit.

  7. Woods is only part-right in his assertion that his opponents “have supported tax increases.” Jay Love HAS backed tax increases; he was a major, down-the-line supporter of amendment 1 (the biggest tax increas in U.S. history) but Harri Anne Smith has NEVER voted for any tax increase (to my knowledge).

  8. Annonymous please do your research. Harri Anne has absolutely supported a tax increase. She voted for the property tax increase that passed last year and was sponsored by Hank Sanders. The bill she voted for allowed people in Jefferson ,Madison, Dallas and other counties to raise the property taxes in Houston,Montgomery,Elmore and about 6 other counties in the 2nd congressional district. You can look up the vote on ALISON. Goto 2005 special session
it was SB12 sposored by Hank Sanders. Also she has taken plenty of money from AEA go check her financial disclosures from 1998.

  9. Commenters 7 and 8: there is a difference between voting to let a proposed amendment go to the people for a vote and “supporting a tax increase.” Both 2003’s Amendment 1 and the 2006 10-mill amendment were simply proposals to the electorate, for the electorate to approve or disapprove, and Rep. Love’s or Sen. Smith’s voting to put either on the ballot does not equate to support of any underlying tax increases for their own sake. You both may as well save your mudballs for something else.

  10. I guess faith based, business orientated means stealing in the name of the Lord.

I agree with Cousin Lou, Republicans do a Heck of a job at “prudent change.”

  11. per usual, bhmhomeboy spouts off his useless garbage. I can remember a few weeks back when everything you said was not only crazy - but flat out wrong from a factual stand point. Now is no exception. I don’t think Brittney is the only bi polar person out there…just look to bhm.

  12. I assume the “faith based” description is an appeal to the religious nuts of the party.

    Oh brother.

Is an endorsement from Brother Giles impending?

  13. Hey Wiregrass, your personal invectives do little to add to the discussion. You might be better served if you quit slinging mud at others.

  14. You don;t know bhmhomeboy’s history on here Bridget. Wiregrass is spot on.

  15. I certainly don’t have a history of resorting to personal attacks, insults and name calling.

I do have a history of respecting the right of every person on “The Parlor” to express their point of view.

I might not agree with every opinion expressed here, but I respect your right the express them, I would appreciate the same courtesy.

  16. Lotta sleaze here. It looks like some don’t want to debate issues and would rather resort to name calling. My 5-year old would feel right at home.

  17. I think Bhamhomeboy adds a good perspective to the site, he’s not the most temperate poster but generally has a well informed opinion.

    Keep it up Bhamhomeboy.

  18. Thanks Anonymous, but could you please explain what you mean by “not the most temperate poster on the site”?

  19. I have been in the presence of some of these “so-called” faith/christian based beliefs. I believe that a person, especially politicians, can learn to be the same person they desire to be personally and professionally. I am confused when people switch personalities based on whichever personality is profitable or looks “good” for the public.

Also, we need to scrutinize the reaction to oil shortage by drilling in Alaska for th following reasons:

    1. The oil drilled WILL quickly be depleted, then what?
    2. We have already destroyed so much of this beautiful planet that was not designed for destruction and depletion.
    3. Have you already forgotten the Exxon fiasco? Greed, lies, deliberate obstruction of justice, and above all the horrific destruction of land, water, and animal life. This earth was created with a miraculous balance. We are only beginning to reap the pains of imbalance from OVERPOPULATION, ABUSE OF HUMANS, ANIMALS, AND THE ENVIORNMENT.

These issues could be more readily resolved if we TRY to remember the dignity of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Thank you, linda.
