Congressional Candidates’ Campaign Coffers

Filed under: Campaign & Election, AL and DC — Danny @ 11:47 am

Pile of moneyState Rep. Jay Love (R – Montgomery), candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District seat being vacated by Terry Everett (R - Enterprise) announced in a statement yesterday that his campaign coffers will show more than $369,000 cash on hand when he files with the Federal Elections Commission later this month.

This represents “almost $70,000 in donations raised in the last month alone from 142 separate contributors” and $300,000 of personal funds that Love loaned the campaign.

“We are ahead of the curve in terms of fundraising and resources, which will allow our conservative message to be heard throughout the district,” Love said.

Josh Segall, a yet-unannounced Democratic candidate for Alabama’s 3rd Congressional District seat, told the Hole in the Wall Gang this week that he had raised ~$50,000 so far, and he is telling others that he will have raised $100,000 by his mid-January kickoff. (The Hole in the Wall Gang is a group of Montgomery Democratic heavyweights including, for example, Paul Hubbert and Jere Beasley.) The 3rd District is now represented by Republican Mike Rogers.

No figures have been made available from the campaign of Republican state Sen. Harri Anne Smith who is also running for the 2nd Congressional District against Jay Love.

Reports are due to the FEC by January 31 and will be available online on February 15.

  5. Love raised $70,000. Not bad I guess. I will be interested in what Senator Smith has done and if she puts any of her own cash into it. David Woods said in the previous story he will put 500,000 of his own so that puts him on par with Love instantly.

  6. I find it highly interesting and a more than a bit disturbing that Jay Love has “loaned” his campaign $300,000 so far. In the past, those “loans” have been paid off by special interests such as AEA, the public workers’ union, and other liberal groups after the election.

This is a dangerous trend that Love is setting. We don’t need political debtors in congress.

  10. Love must decide if he will breach the millionaire rule. If he does, look for a frenzy of activity in fund raising from opponents.
