Bobby Bright’s Marathon Party Dance

Album Cover of Chubby Checker doing the LimboParty dances… there’s the Limbo. The Macarena had its moment. The Chicken Dance, of course. Soulja Boy, anyone? And there’s that ridiculous moment at the Christmas dance in “It’s a Wonderful Life” when everybody’s dancing up a storm in the gym and no one realizes the floor is moving. I digress. Party dances…

But Bobby Bright’s party dance is of a different nature. Which party’s banner will he carry in the 2nd Congressional District Race next year? Around and around the question, he dances. Some are convinced he’ll run as one, some as the other.

Today in Roll Call, he indicates that he’s clearly giving thought to running as a Democrat:

Bright did say that more important than party affiliation is the fact that the 2nd is a conservative district. He also noted that the conservative Blue Dog Coalition is a “big and growing” part of the House Democratic majority.

Bright, whose wife is a lifelong Democrat, added that “military and agriculture are very hot issues in this district, and the Democratic Party has assured me that if I was running as a Democrat they would do everything they possibly could to make sure that I get assigned to those committees and that’s important to this district and important to me in making this decision.”

Rep. Artur Davis (Ala.), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s top recruiter, said the DCCC “does want Bobby Bright as a candidate.”

I am a Republican who lives in the 2nd Congressional district and the idea that Bright would try and pass himself off as a Republican makes me want to throw-up.
Smith, Love, and whoever else is running would beat him like a drum in a Republican primary. For Bright to run and win in a party primary that he has no history of having support out of against competition that has a party base is the height of stupidity. Oh yeah I am talking about Bobby Bright who by the way doesn’t live in the district.

  • DB

preach on DB. everything he said is correct. i am sure bright will run as a dem…and come november, he will lose as a dem.

  • GOPer

last comment was by me, not DB…

  • I live in that district, too. I support the minority in the state senate but I’d vote for the very likeable Bobby Bright ahead of Harri Anne Smith if it came down to those two.

I’m not sure about Jay Love but she will not get my vote.

  • Reactionary

Even if he got assigned to those committees, the national Democrats are so weak on Defense (or openly hostile to the military) that he won’t be helping his district. The ‘Blue Dog’ mask won’t help much either – although it is better than the Congressional Progressive Caucus (about a third of House Dems – members chair more than half of standing committees). Note that the CPC has close ties to the Democratic Socialists of America (Socialist International).

For example, look at Bud Cramer (D – AL 5th), his Democrat friends would just as soon cut the Missile Defense work in the 5th District – thank goodness we have Sen. Shelby.

  • Huh?

“the national Democrats are so weak on Defense (or openly hostile to the military)”

Are you serious? The Kool-Aid must taste good, Reactionary.

“Note that the CPC has close ties to the Democratic Socialists of America (Socialist International).’

Where do you get this crap? RNC stationery? Joseph McCarthy’s manifesto for preying on the ignorant?

Shelby’s really a damn Democrat anyway.

  • SamfordDem

That pretty much does it, I guess. No way Bright could win the Repub primary after those comments.

  • All my Exes have Rolexes

Anyone else notice the way the Demo above who supports Bright might support Rino Jay Love but not Harri Anne Smith?

Write this down: Jay Love is in bed with PUBLIC EMPOLYEE Unions and traditional Democrat special interests. He is way closer to Bobby Bright than he will admit right now. Harri Anne Smith – whatever else you can say about her – is a tried and true real Republican. Voters in the primary should remember that when Rino Jay tries to convince them otherwise . . . .

  • jeff

I thought that Harri Anne Smith was a Democrat before running for the Senate???

  • CapitolInsider

She was a Democrat and she was also pro-choice. Ask Chip Bailey.

  • JT

it is very true she was a dem and proud of her ties to wallace before she ran for the senate.

  • Terry

I will vote for Smith ten times before I vote for Love. You might as well give the Dem’s special interests a seat in Congress if Love is elected. He belongs in the State House, where his power can be minimized.
If I thought David Grimes was running, I would support him. But as of now, Harri Anne is the Republican’s best bet.

  • I think comment #8 calls me a “Demo” even though I stated that I support the minority in the senate. Oh, I also support Bob Riley.
FWIW, I’ve never voted a straight ticket and probably never will.
I won’t vote for Harri Anne Smith either.

99% of the middle aged Republicans in this state were Democrats 20 years ago. Yes, that’s an exaggeration, but if Republicans purged all their former Democrats they’d be a small minority. What should matter is a candidates positions on the issues and the conviction and consistency with which they’ve fought for those positions.

  • Reactionary

Huh? – yes, openly hostile. Let’s look at Rep. Barbara Lee (D – 9th CA), Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

She (with Rep. Dellums) aided Cuban Communists and their agents before the US invasion of Grenada, where the US ending up fighting Cuban troops.

She was the only House member to vote ‘No’ on the resolution to use military force against the terrorists who attacked the US on 9/11.

Look at the records of these CPC members: Lynn Woolsey, Neil Abercrombie, Jim McDermott.
The CPC has long maintained cordial ties with the Democratic Socialists of America, which hosted its website during the 1990s.
“Capital Insider” you are a bald-faced liar about Harri Anne Smith.. Take that back. I know Harri Anne Smith and she has NEVEDR repeat NEVER been anything but pro-life. That comment is a lie. Take that back.

This page is for comentary and lots of stuff goes back and forth. But that is a lie and libelous. You should be ashamed of yourself. And by the by, Harri Anne has NEVER run for office as anything but a Republican. Look it up.

  • PikeCountyguy

Love is a smart guy and would be dedicated to the job of US Representative. I can’t say the same for Smith. That pro choice statement about her is slander though – it is not true. She did id herself as a dem though – and at a time when most former dems in the area had switched to being Rs long. long ago. But she is a conservative i give her that. But so is Love. To say he would be influenced by liberal special interests in congress is ridiculous. those smith supporters that say such crap are full of just that…crap.

  • CapitolInsider

    Dear BS,
It is common knowledge that Harri Anne was a Democrat. She sat next to my business partner at a Jefferson Jackson Dinner(that is a Democrat Event) in 1997. She was pro choice at the time. She did change political parties before she ran for the Senate but she flirted with running as a Democrat. You can call it slander if you want but it is the truth. Her father was a huge Wallace supporter and very close to Wallace. And she bought into “their’s not a dime’s worth of difference between a Dem and a Repub”. But the group in my hometown convinced her she had to run as a Repub to win.

  • Stephen

She was not supportive of Everett in 92 and worked hard for a dem to win the seat.

  • Harri Anne is a real consefvative

The remark above about Harri Anne Smith having once been “pro-choice” is a lie. Stuff like that is beneath contempt even on a political blog. If it is a supporter of Jay Love posting garbage ike that, I can tell where this campaign is headed. Does Jay have Joe Perkins working for him again? it sure smells like it.

  • CapitolInsider

Dear “Harri Anne is a conservative” ,
Everything I said is true. It won’t showup in the Dothan Eagle but it is true. By the way Hammrick (Matrix)is working with Harri Anne.

  • PikeCountyguy

Harri Anne Smith will change colors to get elected. She has proven that. Just smile and tell everyone what they want to hear is her strategy. TAKE A STAND WILL YA!

  • Hey Danny

The post about Harri Anne Smith working with Matrix is an out-and-out lie. I am willing to go on the record with Danny on that one. “CapitaolInsider” I am calling you a liar and you are one. Danny e-mail me and I will confirm this privately for you. That is a lie. Absoulute.

  • I’m going to agree with it being a lie about her using Matrix. It is no secret she uses Swinehart (or however you spell it).

  • The holidays hit, and I’ve been slow getting back on the horse.

But I think CapitolInsider in comment 22 has been sufficiently called out. If you have some evidence that Sen. Smith is working with Matrix, now would be a good time to cough it up.

Not sure what the big deal would be… I know the stereotype of Matrix working with Dems, but they have been working with the minority coalition in the Senate (all the Republicans and a few Dems).
