On Bright and AL-02

Green AL-02 cutoutFrom this weekend’s email…

Just read your most recent comments about Bobby Bright. I do not know what he’s gonna do.

But do know that some Dems feel that he is being “set up” by the Repubs who think they can knock him off in their primary.

Seems to me that in a non-legislative, non-gubernatorial year, turnout in the Repub primary will tend to be the more hard-core party folks, and Bright is gonna have to do a helluva selling job to get them to come his way as the new kid on the block. Certainly Jay Love and Harri Anne Smith will paint him as a “carpetbagger.”

So I think his route through the Repub primary will be much, much tougher than if he goes the Dem route.

In primaries, the Washington special interest money stays basically out of play for candidates. This means Bright will need to come up with $500,000-$750,000 dollars from within the district to be competitive as a Repub.

He could get the by for much less in the Dem primary.

And at the end of the day, if elected as a Repub, what does he have? A place amongst the masses of those out of power in Congress.

And if Winton Blount is such a Repub power broker, how come he is so far on the outside looking in these days?

  1. I think Winton is no longer a player because his monetary resourcers are largely depleted following an expensive, nasty divorce to marry a much younger woman who also has expensive tastes.

  2. Blount wants something. He’s never been Bright’s personal friend, so what is it? It could be the fact that it’s a win/win for Blount, even if Bright loses. Bright runs and wins as a Rep… great. Blount is a kingmaker. Bright loses, great. Blount ended Bright’s political career and Blount’s boy on the counsel becomes more powerful. Or, Blount is just bored and likes to mess around in politics. In any case, Blount has no juice with the republicans who will be voting in this primary. In fact, his past, alluded to by #1, would be a hindrance and just further tie Bright to “those devils in Montgomery.” The two of them would raise about $10,000, Bright would empty his savings account, and they would get trounced by Smith.
