George Wallace, Jr., already mentioned as a candidate for the Public Service Commission Presidency, may be showing some interest in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District race. A Parlor source says the word is that Wallace has been making calls recently to the old gang about a possible run for the seat.
Possibly related… Wallace, who reportedly has not been seen much around Montgomery over the last year, was spotted at the Montgomery GOP Christmas Party last night.

Huh? Last I heard, he was done with election races. He lost his seat on the PSC in the last election, remember?
I bet if a poll were done for the race, Wallace would place first by a large margin in the name ID section. He must be thinking that he can at least get into a run-off in the primary. Smith and Love have got to be shaking in their boots.
Wallace ran as a DEMOCRAT for this VERY SEAT and LOST in 1992. I don’t think he can sell himself as a Republican after that AND his smashing defeat for Lt. Gov. last year.
Wallace also has been living in Birmingham the last few years – might hurt more than a bit if he decided to run for this district.
Good lord, these well known political families just cant stay away from the “game”. Look at some other examples….Jim Folsom. Harold Ford Jr is making noise in Tennessee about running for Governor in ‘10. The son of former US Senator Jim Sasser was appointed chairman of the Tennessee Democrat Party this summer. You also have some GOPers out there who would give their spleen if Jeb Bush would run for President next year. Its very disappointing that people out there on both sides keep lining up behind these same old families and refuse to give someone new a chance.
Wallace has been living WAY outside the district. While there is no residency requirement – his living near BHAM will not do him well at all if he decides to give this seat a run. He has been out of the game and out of touch with district 2 for too long now. Please, can he just be put out to pasture I mean really!
You got to be kidding! We Alabamians got to do better than this. If we elect him we deserve all the ridicule anyone can throw our way. Wake up Alabama!
Run, George Run!!!
In the 2006 race for Lt Gov, while George narrowly lost to Luther Strange statewide, George carried District 2 in a landslide. George Wallace Jr is a brilliant man, a compassionate individual with a tremendous record on the PSC and as State Treasurer. George Wallace Jr would be a national figure automatically if he walked on to the floors of Congress. Also, George would help the GOP ticket in the November election.
Run, George Run!!! Please let me know where to send my donation.
John – you are feeling wallace’s importance WAY too much. Yes, he is well known but the people of district 2 actually need someone that wants to be in congress – is committed to the district – and yes has actually been living in the district. Let him stay in birmingham and run for statewide office – not seek the congressional post just because he needs a job. We need some fresh faces not the names and days of old.
George still has a residence in District 2 and grew up in District 2,
I agree with the posts that say Wallace’s days are done and he doesn’t need to try and tie himself to the district when he lives in Birmingham. His days are done and we need candidates othern than old names looking to be back in office just for name’s sake. Ring a bell Lucy?
I think George Wallace is excatly what the GOP does NOT need. Retread former Democrats? NO! That is the problem right now with the GOP in Alabama. We have all these RINOS who stopped being Democrats NOT because they had Republican ideas and principles; they switched beacause they could NOT GET ELECTED AS DEMOCRATS – JUST LIKE GEORGE JR.
No. WE do not need that. It is time to elect people who actually believe in the conservative, low tax, small government message of the GOP – not Democrats whose basic positions remain unchanged.
George has always advocated the low tax, small government message.
Would you say that Gov Riley holds to this message?
Remember, in the runoff with Luther Strange, George was the more conservative of the two.
Luther also prominently pointed out – in the ads that defeated George – that he (Luther) was a LIFELONG REPUBLICAN. People understood that Junior is a party-switching, old-style, Alabama Democrat. The leopard cannot change his spots.
You can push Junior all you want to – he’s done. Stick a fork in him. He cannot win.
Someone needs to tell the Bush administration about the small government message of the GOP.
I think all this talk about George Jr is worthless. He will not run for Congress.
He’d have no problem with name ID, especially in this district. If there is one big time race that George Wallace Jr could actually win, it would be this one.
I don’t doubt he could win it – and yes his name ID is strong. The problem is – I think he would not be good at all as a Rep. for this district. We need candidates that have more to offer and actually live here. Stay in Bham George…maybe run for PSC again.
I agree with those that say he should stay comfy in Bham and not try to represent district 2. I don’t think he would be good either.
He would be better than Senator Harri Anne Smith – but who wouldn’t???????????? HELP US PLEASE!!!!!
I’m not arguing that he’d be a great rep. There’s a big disparity between who would be the best representative and who can actually be elected. The truth is that most people, even most people who vote, know jack about their representatives, but they do know the name George Wallace and that name probably inspires more positive feelings in this district than anywhere else in the country.
I would actually wager that Harri Anne Smith would be far superior to George Jr. Harri Anne does have an impeccable conservative record.
Harry would not be far superior to anyone…let’s just get real about that. She might be as better or as good as some but she is hardly in the superior category in any way. Be reasonable.
I agree with Jason B. Harri Anne is more of the average variety and not anything superior.
Harri Anne is far superior to “Rino Jay Love”.
I believe Love is the lesser of the two evils in that race.
Love the “lesser of two evils”? He _Jay Love- voted for the biggest tax in history (Harri Anne voted NO), got elected with AEA support (Harri Anne has never taken a cent from Paul Hubbert), eliminated a great conservative voice in Bob McKee . . .Harri Anne has a 100% conservative votger rating. How on God’s green earth can you say that Rino Jay Love is “the lesser of two evils?” And while you are at it, tell us all how someone with a 100% rating from every conservative group in this state (thast would be Harri Anne Smith) is “evil.”
Democrat.
That is why Harri Anne Smith may not get elected. Her base is made up of wackjobs who view any criticism of her as a liberal conspiracy. Kind of like the supporters of a certain other female politician on my side of the fence. The bottom line is that, in Alabama, most people who now vote Republican used to vote Democrat. You cannot win an election in any Congressional district of Alabama without making at least a token appeal to economic moderates.
I agree that Jay Love’s base is totally moderate/liberals who have Democrat sympathies. Harri Anne Smith is a Republican. Whichever group is bigger will win the race, as those two candidates have staked out their bases.
All these Harri Anne kool aide drinkers crack me up. Can anyone just say she is not the brightest bulb in the room? OK then – I just said it.
I agree; she is not exactly a rocket scientist. In fact, I wonder if she will be able to take on and fully underatand the large issues instead of relying on “vote for me yall, i’m conservative”
