House Republican Retreat Items

GOP LogoThe Alabama House Republican Caucus concluded a two-day retreat today. The annual event is intended to build some unity in the group and doesn’t particularly generate big news. Though the caucus’s legislative agenda will not be set until January, the Parlor hears that caucus members did agree that illegal immigration was the biggest issue facing Alabama right now. There was also near-unanimous support for ending annual reappraisals of property taxes.

All the Republicans agree that illegal immigration is the biggest issue facing Alabama? Why am I not surprised.

    homey – IMO:

    1. illegal immigrants are depressing the wages and benefits of Alabama citizens.

    2. illegal immigrants are bringing a crime wave with them.

Reactionary, what about the 43 million Alabama children that don’t have access to health care or health insurance? What about the millions of Alabama children that live in poverty? What about the need for a new State Constitution and Tax reform? What about the corporations that are getting tax breaks to come into the state and hire illegal workers? What about jobs, what about the enviroment, what about schools? Alabama has a lot of pressing problems but the so called “illegals” aren’t the cause.

Homey – how many people do you think live in Alabama?

I think that the GOP plan (nationally) is to secure the border and punish employers who hire illegal workers.

Fewer illegals means higher wages and benefits like health care for Alabamians – because illegals won’t be competing for the jobs. Fewer illegals means the tax money goes to educating Alabama citizens.

You and I may agree on tax breaks for corporations who turn out to be bad neighbors – like the ones hiring legal foreign workers.

There are far bigger problems than illegal immigration in Alabama and the rest of the country. Concerning jobs, What about all the factories that have closed in Alabama the past decade and moved overseas? What about all the Made in China labels on just about every product now? Yes, this takes away jobs, but it has nothing to do with illegal immigration. Concerning healthcare, there will always be many people left out in the cold as long as we have a for-profit system. In Alabama, most people overpay for health insurance because blue cross has a monopoly in the state. This hurts all of us financially, but has nothing to do with illegal immigration. There are many other problems that are too numerous to exist that have nothing to do with illegal immigrants.
