Larry Langford should use his Bully Pulpit to get a new State Constitution to address the inequitable education funding.

I agree. And although a cash bonus would have cost taxpayers significantly more than billboards, tell me what that has to do with Larry Langford. :)

If Riley really wanted to thank Alabama teachers he could have given them a cash bonus instead of a billboard with his picture on it.

Aye. You are correct, Walt. That would be better and more effective than teachers alone. For one thing, parent participation is greatly needed, and it's been shown that schools with more parent involvement yield better results. It would be nice if Langford could use his "bully pulpit" to get parents to do this.

ALmod, in #12, I'm skeptical OLPC will be able to deliver those laptops at the advertised price. Somewhere on OLPCnews is a quote from the manufacturer that they need a few hundred thousand orders to deliver them at that price. As of yesterday, nobody was yet signed a contract and given a check for that many.

While better teachers would help, I think things would improve if the students had a reason to work hard in school and had something to aspire to more than standing on the corner. While mayors can't make cultural change, they do have a bully pulpit to use.

By the way... On topic here...

OLPC discussion states that they haven't really guaranteed anything to Birmingham, yet. They've merely stated thus far that Birmingham would be considered. It could work out in the end, but either way, I'm a bit hesitant to give laptops to a group of people who can't even be expected to return textbooks at the end of each year. If Langford's truly interested in improving the quality of education, I'd recommend starting with attracting better teachers to the district. You only have to look at some of bulletin boards and blogs to know that spell check and grammar check are no substitute for flesh and blood.

Yeah, and if you'd do your homework, you'd see I'm not happy about that, either.

So are you saying that if there's a behavior we don't like, another politician should model that? Percentage-wise, when you consider the revenue and budget that Birmingham has, Langford is well on his way to leaving George W. in his dust.

No matter what the press says, I do think that OLPC Birmingham is political grandstanding more than anything else. Just check out the OLPC News discussion about it: http://www.olpcnews.com/countries/usa/olpc_alabama_wintel_blame.html
