HD 12 Race Update
Pastor James Fields is beating expectations and has a double digit lead over School Board member Sheila Kretzschmar in polling for the HD 12 Democratic primary special election next week, according to a Political Parlor source. Supporters had low expectations of Kretzschmar going in, and she has failed to meet them. Apparently, she has not been good on the stump, she has been not showing energy in the campaign, and the word heard here is “unimpressive.”
Will publisher Ed Flaig draw enough votes to force a run-off? Would a mailout or two and robocalls save Kretzchmar’s campaign? It might be too late. The caveat, as always, is that the unexpected can happen in a special election because of the low turnout.
Sen. Zeb Little and Democratic Party allies like AEA and trial lawyers were said to be backing Kretzschmar, but given the polling #’s, they may be keeping their powder dry for the general election. Sen. Little has been a strong corner man for Kretzschmar, and her defeat may be at least a small embarrassment for him.
On the Republican side, indications are pointing toward a run-off between former GOP county chair Bill Floyd and county commissioner Wayne Willingham. Greg Johnson and Stephen Parker round out the GOP field.
FWIW, the Parlor hears that Democrat Fields and Republican Floyd are the two candidates polling well in Cullman itself.
The primary election is next Tuesday, November 13.

If Fields and Willingham both win their respective nominations (which is what I expected all along), this would be a general election between an African-American and a white neo-Confederate. In Cullman, Alabama. We’d better start getting ready for the national newsmedia.

I guess Dems figure it’s easier to cede the seat to the Pubs than to fight for a candidate who can win.
