Moore Alternatives to GOP Presidential Nominee?

Filed under: National Politics — Danny @ 8:52 am

Former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani is continuing to lead in the polls for the GOP presidential nomination which is leading “a coalition of influential Christian conservatives” (that includes James Dobson of Focus on the Family) to threaten to back a third-party candidate.

Roy MooreThe talk is that Roy Moore or a “Moore-like candidate” could be drafted for the 2008 presidential race, perhaps by the Constitution Party which has a spot on the presidential ballot in 41 states. (Karl Rove was reportedly concerned that an entry into the presidential race by Alabama’s Roy Moore could scuttle George W.’s re-election in 2004.)

Christian conservatives have been “deeply unhappy about the field of GOP presidential candidates.” Dobson has declared “that he would waste his vote before casting it for either Mr. Giuliani or a Democrat who supports abortion rights, like Mrs. Clinton, of New York.” Dobson has also said “that he does not support Giuliani, Arizona Sen. John McCain or former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson as nominees for the Republican Party.”

The talk may be premature as a Focus on the Family spokesman has since said that Dobson is “not yet participating in any planning for a third party,” and “spoke out against the idea at the meeting” of coalition members. Still, a mention of Moore like this gets our attention.

  1. I’ve been wondering if it would be possible for Ron Paul to drop out of the race for the Republican nomination and run as an indepedent. I heard a GOP source speculate (as in he had nothing to back this up with) that the nightmare scenareeio for the national Republican party would be for Ron Paul and Roy Moore to run together on a Libertarian/Constitution Party ticket. With all the national malaise among religious conservatives about the current crop of GOP candidates, a ticket like that could do some real damage, but not as much as Bloomberg/Hagel would have. I’m still curious as to why that never materialized.

  5. Ron Paul and Roy Moore are the antithesis of each other. Paul is a libertarian who wants the government’s hands out of everything. Moore is a theocrat who wants Big Brother to intrude upon our lives in order to impose his “God-fearing” dictates on everyone.

  6. Agree with 5–they sorta represent the 2 fringes of R’s that
    are not real happy.

Bigger nightmare would be Paul (L) on ballot in all 50 states
and Moore on ballot in 41 states
