AL-02 and Residency Requirements

Alabama with the 2nd Congressional District highlightedAs you peruse the AL-02 Big List, where the Political Parlor keeps up with who is, who isn’t, and who may be running for the seat being made open by Terry Everett’s retirement, keep in mind that you do not actually have to be a resident of the district to run for the seat. I have seen statements around the net saying or implying that one person or another lives outside the district and so would not run.

Granted, residency outside the district may make a candidate less attractive, but it does not prohibit someone from running for the seat.

  • Danny you have Bright and the Prattville Mayor listed in the GOP column as well…is that correct?
I think Speaker Hammett probably would be the toughest Democrat in this race with Commish Sparks a close second.
Jimmy Holley would be tough as well but the problem with him is he’d probably end up switching once
    he got to DC.

As cautious as Seth hammett is, i do not think he will run the risk of losing this race . . .it would endanger his considerable power base in Montgomery.

I think Bright will have to run as a Democrat, due to his dependence on the Democrats to unseat Folmar in ‘99.

  • Forget my question about Bright…I didnt read on down the page.

Love, Grimes, and Wren – none of these candidates strike me as a likely GOP nominee and the fact that they all seem to be running will thoroughly divide the Montgomery vorte and almost assure other candidates making the (likely) runoff.

I’m not for tinkering with the residency requirements of the US Constitution any more than I’m in favor of a state senator not complying with the residency requirements of Section 47 of the Alabama Constitution, but apparently at least one state senator has been in non-compliance for some time and gets away with it.

Regardless of Political Stripes Vote Tomorrow

As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices. Call me a political junkie, but I am fascinated by the whole electoral process—what age group votes most often, what issues motivate them and what media outlet is the most effective. While all of my interest in the political world is a hobby [...]

My Time is Up

I write this blog with some mixed emotion. Over the last eight years I have served in the House of Representatives, and this Thursday will most likely be my last day in session as a House member. Of course, my term goes until November, and there could always be a special session at [...]

TRYIN’ TO CATCH UP

I’ve been in Venice on a little vacation and just returned last night.  I’ve been trying to catch up and see that there have been few dramatic events in the last 10 days.  I thought the www.fivethirtyeight.com piece was especially good, though the comments reflected the anti-Alabama knee-jerk reactions of those who live outside the [...]
