U.S. Rep. Terry Everett to Retire

Post has been updated. And again.

U.S. Rep. Terry EverettU.S. Rep. Terry Everett (R – Rehobeth) has announced that he will not seek a ninth term to represent Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District.

Because there has been much speculation that he might retire, there has also been much speculation about who would run if he did. Names on the Republican side have included state Representatives Steve Clouse, David Grimes, Jay Love, and Greg Wren, state Sen. Harri Anne Smith, Attorney General Troy King, and possibly even PSC President Jim Sullivan. Add former PSC Commissioner George Wallace, Jr., state Representatives Benjamin Lewis and Barry Mask, and state Sen. Larry Dixon as possibilities. Larry Dixon ran for the seat in 1992, losing in the GOP Primary to Everett.

Names mentioned on the Democratic side have included Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright, state Sen. Wendell Mitchell, state Rep. Terry Spicer, state Senator Jimmy Holley, Speaker of the House Seth Hammett, and Agricultural Commissioner Ron Sparks.

We will sort it all out and update the Alabama Line accordingly.

  • Im sure the Democrats are crossing their fingers and praying that the GOP nominates either King,Wallace or Sullivan. They will eat those three alive if their nominated.

Harri Anne Smith will be the strongest candidate

Smith and King will pass — they believe they are headed for greater things.
Sparks, as far as I know, has no base in the district
Bright is a wiregrass guy, but how a Dem raises money in that district is BEYOND me, unless, like Speaker Hammett, he has clout and longstanding tentacles in the district.
Love and Wren seem like movers.

You left out two serious names – Pratville mayor Jim Byard and State Representative barry Mask….on the republican side…..Don’t forget Elmore County now makes up about 17 % of that republican primary , so Mask would be pretty strong , and he went to school and was raised in Montgomery, so he will get his share there too. …..mayor Byard has been a strong leader for Prattville . PR momma

  • Thanks, PR momma, I had intended to include Mask from the beginning and was updating the post as you were leaving the comment.

  • Mask will get slaughtered. Sparks lives one street away from the district. Byard has strong pull in the Tri-County area but the district is way to big for the Prattville mayor

I hear Jay Love has already hired Daxbell.

Harri Anne Smith is not interested — she would only run for one other office. Trust me! You also left off Mark Culver – Houston County Commission Chairman… He is well liked! Rep. Terry Spicer is a double-dipper who’s flex time records, and House Journal may look like Laura Hall’s? I personally think the do! A Paul Hubbert “whore” is unelectable in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District.

  • [...] In addition to the potential candidates mentioned before, another name floated as a possiblity on the Republican side is former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Terry Butts. [...]

Wow , wm. Wyatt Wallace , your hatred for mr. Mask is typical of a leftist democrat….what didi he do to you – run over your dog ? If yawl hate him so much , he must be the right guy for the job ! Strange that you didn’t tee-off on any of the other mentioned republicans ? Do you work for Ron Sparks & Paul Hubbert ? Sal

  • [...] Danny is reporting that Rep. Terry Everett (R-AL 2nd District) plans to retire at the end of his current term. He’s also covering the rumors and certainties of who will run to take Everett’s place. The district, which encompasses Montgomery and several counties south (see map here), leans Republican — but not as much as my very own 6th District.  Stay tuned. [...]

Too bad for Greg Wren that he lives in Mike Rogers district. I know that you don’t actually have to live in a Congressional District to be elected to run to represent it (one of those strange facts of politics), but it sure does make it harder.

  • Actually I am a Republican, I just cannot stand Mask. He get up on his high horse, took a shot at sparks and when Sparks responded Mask did not reply and I do not want somebody like him as a Representative in DC. Got any more assumptions you would like to make about me ole Sal?

  • And Wendell would switch parties “IF” he ran which won’t happen, he is older than TE. Wendell just stays with the Democrats for the powers that come with his seniority. He campaigns about how Conservative he is an had Republicans hosting events for him.

    William Wyatt Wallace:

    BTTT…
“He campaigns about how Conservative he is an had Republicans hosting events for him.”

And he also uses AEA’s Joe Reed on black radio stations, talking about how liberal he is… Go figure…

what if t-roy (king of elba and the wiregrass)had the scoop and was raising his profile for a run at something other than the gov’s office in mind all along? just a thought…

someone running for congress in the second cd doesn’t care what a repub DA or his supporters think in sheby co., right?

Does anyone know whether 2607 Leonidas Drive in east Montgomery is in the AL-2 district? That’s Senator Wendell Mitchell’s address. I guess he could always run out of his P.O. Box in Luverne, anyway, like he has for his seat in the state senate.

  • Pookie

    Don:

There was a big stink over that issue a while back. Senator Wendell Mitchell lives in a mansion in Montgomery. He clams to have a domicile in his home district.

Domicile (law) is a term that designates the law of a person for purposes of determining certain legal questions such as the ability to invoke the jurisdiction of a Court, or the interpretation of a will. A person may have many places of residence, but may only have one domicile.

  • Don

Pookie, Section 47 of the Alabama Constitution requires a state senator to be a resident of and reside in the district they represent. The Houghton Mifflin online dictionary gives these definitions:
    (1) resident
NOUN: One who resides in a particular place permanently or for an extended period.
    (2) reside
INTRANSITIVE VERB: To live in a place permanently or for an extended period.

Obviously Senator Mitchell doesn’t comply with the constitutional requirement for residency even though he may claim that his legal residence (his domicile) is in Luverne in a house he doesn’t live in.

  • If two candidates get the same number of votes what happens?
