The Political King
|
Robby Owens, 2007: |
As the Republican Shelby County D.A., he is stripped of a capital murder case by Attorney General Troy King for espousing a position once held by Troy King. Owens called King’s move “purely political,” and points out that King had previously supported the position now held by Owens, “It dismays me, when the scenario he used as an example actually occurs, the attorney general doesn’t have the convictions to stand by what he knows is right. It’s in his brief, and he said it himself.” |
|
Robby Owens, 2006: |
Helps organize 27 district attorneys across the state to endorse Democrat John Tyson Jr. for Attorney General over Troy King. AP: “Owens said he hoped he wasn’t ‘burning bridges’ with King because he considers him a friend.” |
At the Year-in-Review Banquet, we’ll seat him next to Tony Castaldo who can commiserate with his own tales of King’s machinations.

I confess this is the first I have heard of “Randall Houston’s travails.”
But GIYF (Google is your friend) and the story I found is pretty remarkable.

Considering national events, looks like open season on prosecutors. Imagine we’ll also see a lot more police/prosecutor misconduct defenses.

This is not the first tale I have heard about ‘unusual’ prose-
cution in that area, Danny. Will see a source tomorrow and ask
for a memory refresh–no mention of the AG in that one.
What was it that lost the election for Tyson? He was obviously
more experienced, competent and forward thinking–that program to
intervene early and keep kids from the jail track. King just
kept preaching law-and-order.
What’s in his background that makes the AG so super punishmen-
tarian? And hypocritical (Roy Johnson, Ala Power, etc. I also
see that he is still McCain’s state chair butattended an August fundraiser in Mountain Brook for Thompson, http://www.suntimes.com/news/novak/487693,CST-EDT-novak29.article

Helen — Lack of statewide name identification, inability to put together a traditional democratic voting base, political infighting, and a crime victim making a commercial against him stopped the Tyson campaign.

[…] Attorney General Troy King demonstrates that politics can be personal with him (e.g. with Tony Castaldo and Robby Owens), but that doesn’t mean its smart. Continuing to goad district attorneys around the state by sending critical news releases naming individual DA’s who took a public stance opposing King on the Robbie Owens issue, well, it simply does not feel politically astute.
