HD 12 Chatter

I am interested in how quickly the chatter starts on a question like who will fill an office that is being vacated.

Rep. Neal Morrison (D – Cullman) announces yesterday that he is resigning from the seat that represents District 12 in the state House, and already the grapevine has raised (and rejected) candidates.

On the Democratic side, County Board of Education member Sheila Kretzschmar is said to be planning a run. We hear that other possible candidates include Keith Kugler, the county chair for the Democratic Party, and Brad Williams, a former aide to Zeb Little who now works for PSC Commissioner Susan Parker.

On the Republican side, attorney Rhonda Bruner is said to be pondering the possibility. She lost to Morrison (63% – 37%) in the last election but may be considering a run for the open seat. We have heard attorney Blake West’s name. The previously mentioned Steve Freeman does not live in the district and would not be eligible.

Consider this the early word, not the final word on who might run. The governor hasn’t even set the schedule for a special election yet.

    Hey, Kim Drake IS running.

  • jason

Yeah they talked to Bruner and Kugler in the paper today. Kugler said him and Morrison were childhood pals and Bruner said that she was neighbors with Morrison.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a young new face in the likes of Brad Williams run for the seat.

Is Brad Williams the one who beat Ken Guin for delegate?

  • Anonymous

I did some checking and Brad Williams did beat Guin for delgegate. Very impressive.

I guess it’s Cullman, being able to spell CAT without being spotted the C and the A is not a requirement

  • Anonymous

Kim Drake is clearly the strongest candidate for that position. Does delegate count ar relevant experience? What do they do for the community?

  • Bob

how is Kim Drake “clearly the strongest candidate”?

  • Kenny

Kim Drake is the strongest candidate because she will have AEA,
trial lawyers, and probably ALFA. She will have the highest name id
    of anyone on the ballot.

  • Bob

We dont even know who is running yet…how can she have the highest Name ID?

Besides in a leaning republican county, AEA and Trial Lawyer help would hurt a candidate nor help a candidate.

Sounds like you are just trying to start the buzz on Drake. I predict that if she runs she will be beat by the Republican nominee.

  • Anonymous

You would have to be stupid not to realize that the name Drake is well known in the district, and the family has a long history of public service. Her name i.d. is also high due to the fact that she just ran a statewide race.

  • Anonymous

Didn’t Drake’s husband get beat in a race in Cullman Co. not too many years ago. Doesn’t sound like
    the name is that strong.

  • Jim

Drake will be tough to beat because she will have the money to run.
The other candidates don’t have the connections she has and won’t get
the support from Montgomery like she will.

  • GG

Drake did not have enough connections to get any money for her Judge race aginast Pittman. I also looked on al.com and she got beat in her home county.

  • AuFan

All this talk about the Democrats, what about Republicans?

  • SamfordDem

Drake would be tough to beat, but the Hillary effect has already begun to hurt female democratic candidates in the South.

  • [...] Wayne Willingham, a Cullman County Commissioner, has announced his intention to run as a Republican for the House District 12 seat vacated by Neal Morrison. Names of others on the grapevine who may run as Republicans for the seat include former Cullman County Superintendent of Education Nancy Horton and the previously mentioned Rhonda Bruner. [...]
