A Survey USA poll released today shows that 59% of Alabamians would vote for Republican incumbent Sen. Jeff Sessions over Democratic challenger Vivian Figures. Thirty-seven percent would vote for Figures. (MoE 4.3%)
A couple of observations about the numbers…
- 30% of Democrats would vote for Sessions. Only 9% of Republicans would vote for Figures.
- Sessions has even stronger support in north Alabama (where 61% would vote for him) than in south Alabama (57%) where he lives.
What would have to happen to turn this into a race?

Not much. I don’t put too much stock into polls but common sense says that this will be a near impossible race for the Democrats to win.
The night after Figures wins, we’ll all be making snow angels in Hades.
A lot can happen between now and election day. Who would have suspected Guy Hunt would get elected governor or that a lawyer from Tuscaloosa County would defeat a incumbent war hero senator?

I think that Republicans downticket will be hurt if the nominee is Romney or, possibly Giuliani. People here are strangely ambivalent about Fred Thompson, but I don’t think he would hurt the ticket. McCain or Huckabee would provide a boost to state candidates. Clinton would hurt the ticket with some potential Democratic voters; I don’t think that’s the case with Obama. People who are ignorant enough to be turned off by a black candidate probably weren’t going to vote Democratic anyway. I know nothing about Figures apart from her husband and what has been in the statewide media the past few months. Has she ever even experienced a serious campaign before?
Figures has never had a serious campaign. The Aladems website has more info on her. Whether she is a sacrificial candidate depends a lot on her party, whether the ADC AEA etc think the race is worth winning and whether or not Session’s runs a sloppy campaign.
What needs to happen? Since no one really gives her a chance at winning, why not take an aggressive stance? I would state that her opponent was not acting on his duty to be a check to Presidential power. Point out the fact that this is one of his ultimate responsibilities. List out the countless lock-step statements and stances my opponent made in near unison with the President. Furthermore, I would add a federal deficit clock to my website to represent the fiscal irresponsibility of which my opponent was a part. Finally, list the accomplishments that could have been made with that deficit spending (i.e. funding SCHIP, funding schools, alternative energy infrastructure, tax cuts for those that don’t make six figures). At each town and city in the state, I would point out an important project that went unfunded. Most importantly, don’t let a day go by without making some noise about these things. Oh, (and of course) spend at LEAST six hours a day fundraising. Sounds easy enough. Of course, I’m a novice, so what do I know.
I agree with aggressive–how about some vision, too, in addition to
pointing out the weaknesses? Alabama Dems could use some better
communication on what they’re about. They blew it with Susan
Parker, who got 44% pretty much on her own.
My vote is for Vivian Davis Figures I think its time for Democrats to control the senate.. Republicans ( jeff sessions ) have done a wonderful Job of screwing the economy up for the future youth.
