Langford Lock Broken in B’ham Mayor’s Race?

Larry LangfordA couple of people tried to suggest to me earlier in the week that Larry Langford may be locking up the Birmingham mayor’s race.

In an email exchange after that post went up, a reader who is keeping up with the race wrote, “I also keep hearing grumblings about a Langford indictment, but apparently those never go away.”

Today…

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has subpoenaed personal finance records for Jefferson County Commissioner Larry Langford, demanding bank statements, checks and other documents dating back to 2002.

Langford calls it politically motivated harrassment. He does not explain why the SEC would want to harrass him, or why the SEC would be a party to harrassment by a Langford political opponent.

I don’t see the lock on that race snapping shut yet.

The idea that Larry would have a lock on the mayor’s race seems like something Larry would be promoting. Perhaps it’s a little naive for you, or anyone, to suggest anyone has a “lock” on that race. I recall William Bell’s “lock” on his first race for mayor, and how insightful that analysis was. And careful you don’t find yourself biting on make-believe polls on this race fabricated by Joe Perkins and the other sleaze balls who work with him. That’s just the sort of thing they’d like you to do.

  • Um, Jim, I don’t see Danny suggesting that Langford has a lock on the race. He says “a couple of people tried to suggest to me” and “I don’t see the lock on that race snapping shut yet”, both of which indicate a good helping of skepticism to me.

Thanks, Kathy, you read it as I intended.

I do agree with Jim that there are a lot of miles to go before this one is settled.

Larry’s camp’s claim that the Bham News conducted a poll showing him at 53%, Kincaid in mid-20s and Cooper at 8% is pure fiction and spin.
The Bham News has not conducted a poll and there is a big question as to whether it will even do so for this
election. The reason LL put this spin out there is because last Saturday at his headquarters he called an
emergency team meeting because HE had conducted a poll showing him at 25% and Cooper at 23%. He proceeded to
cuss everyone one of his workers because they allegedly weren’t doing their jobs. But remember, LL has a history
of this type of brazen spin. A 1979 Birmingham News article reported that LL announced to the Bham City
Council that he had conducted a poll of 800 likely voters with 792 of them saying they were going to
vote for LL. The reporter interviewed Arrington at the meeting who stated he was leaving to go hunt up those
remaining 8 votes. LL is pure hype. Always has been.
