A. J. Cooper’s Lonely Campaign for SD 35

A. J. Cooper, the Democratic candidate in October’s special election for Senate District 35 in Baldwin County, made rounds in Montgomery this week, trying to drum up interest for his campaign. AEA, the state party, labor, lobbyists, and elected Democrats were among those who heard his pitch for support.

A source said that Cooper was frustrated with Democratic groups who he says wanted him to run but who are now not doing anything to help him. He is not getting money from the state party or AEA, for example.

And why not? Well, I hear he is polling at 18%, and “it will be a miracle if he gets 35% of the vote.”

For what it’s worth, I am told that A. J. Cooper is the brother of J. Gary Cooper, an ambassador to Jamaica for President Clinton, and an uncle to Birmingham mayoral candidate Patrick Cooper.

Such is the lonely life of a candidate who “cannot win.” He could be running against a tennis ball or Satan, and not poll better than 40 in Baldwin County.

  • It doesnt matter how great of a candidate he might be because he is just running in the wrong district. It would be like a conservative Republican running for the state senate in Fairfield or Red Bay, Alabama, they just dont match their district’s philosophy.

Yeah Cooper’s lucky people will even meet with him, much less listen to his rantings about winning the seat.

Too bad that D.B. didn’t give that $200,000 ransom money to A.J. rather than jumping out of a plane with it. :-)

Don, that is funny (though we may both be dating ourselves).

FWIW, Todd Snider has a pretty good song out in the last few years about D.B. Cooper.

Well, the cops blocked off all the exit roads
And they turned out all of the hounds
They even dragged the river up a couple of times
To see if he had drowned
With all those men working overtime
They swore they would bring him down
But a parachute and a few hundred dollars
Was all that they ever found
