Democracy Defense League in the News
Good write-up today in the Tuscaloosa News about the Democracy Defense League, its aims, and potential plans for a statewide conference in 2008. The Democracy Defense League is “a grassroots organization fighting for honest elections and more severe penalties for voter fraud in Alabama.” Co-chair Pattie Dismukes is quoted saying, “I want our city and county to become a place where everybody counts as a person.”

Legitimate voter fraud is a serious issue, but the web page of this organization suggests that it is a Republican front group dedicated to the time-honored tradition of scaring poor people away from the polls.

I must be deficient in my crypto-republican-fascist hunting skills. Mind pointing out where the pointers to this conclusion lie?
All I see is a collection of folks trying to do something to make sure elections are honest.

It appears to me that this group is against manipulation of the vote no matter what color
or political affiliation cometh the manipulator.

I’ve been familiar with, and a member of, the Democracy Defense League for some time now. I’ve personally met with 4 past and present members of the leadership of the group. Black citizens have been members of the DDL since its first organizational meeting, and presently serve in several positions in the group. They have been disenfranchised by voter fraud just as much if not more than have the white members. If someone wants to hear a black lady tell it like it is they should go to the DDL website and enquire how to get in touch with Adelaide Hearns. Phone numbers are posted at the top of the home page, and there’s also a “Feedback” page that can be used.
This is an organization worthy of support from concerned citizens in every county in Alabama because voter fraud isn’t confined to a small area of the Black Belt.
And, Danny, I appreciate your bringing the DDL to the attention of your readers.

I should have said that Danny provided a link to the DDL website in his post.

6. The Democracy Defense League is a non-partisan, multi-ethnic group
of concerned citizen fighting against voter fraud. We currently have
four black members on the Board. The Alabama voters committing fraud
are multi-ethnic. Fraud is committed in many ways;bribery, coercion,
black-mail,stealing, to name a few.
The DDL is interested in changing the laws in the state to make these
acts more difficult to commit and to make more stringent the punishment
of those convicted.
About the group keeping voters away from the polls–this group has
also worked hard to register voters of all races to help insure their
opportunity to vote!
Thanks to all for your comments and interest in the DDL.
