Dems for Supreme Court
Democrats mentioned in and around the Parlor as potential candidates for the open Supreme Court seat next year include Sharon Yates, Kimberly Drake, and the previously named Deborah Paseur. Drake, according to one source, has “about a 40% chance of running next year” and could run in 2010.

Unqualified is now the norm. Most of the names mentioned on the GOP side have never really practiced law. I agree that Drake isn’t qualified, but try listing the experience and qulaifications of people like Wise and Bryan.

All right, you’re on:
Wise: 6+ years of judicial office, 4 years as appellate staff counsel, and time at a couple of law firms.
Bryan: appellate staff counsel, almost 15 years as an assistant AG at Environmental Management, and 2+ years as an appellate judge.
Thompson: 10+ years as an appellate judge followed work for the governor’s office.
Now, Drake: admitted to bar in 2004 out of what is still an unaccredited law school and worked with her husband’s firm since then. Drake had no business running for an appellate judgeship in 2006 after only 2 years of experience, and she would do better to pick a district or circuit judgeship after 4 years out of law school than trying for the SUPREME COURT of a state. Ugh.
On the other hand, I think Paseur is a good, experienced candidate. 20+ years on the trial bench is a great credential for a move up to the state Supreme Court. In a similar vein, Sharon Yates out of Montgomery has 12 years as an appellate judge and will have 2 more as a district judge if she runs in 2008.
My point is that the Republicans who might run for the open seat are a pretty strong lot, and it should take someone like a Paseur or a Yates to match up well on the Democratic side. It’s a matter of finding the right stuff.

Well, well, well. I’ve got news for you: first, Thompson has never tried a case before a judge or a jury; nor has Terri Thomas ever tried a case before a jury. Has Wise ever tried a case? No. At least Drake has experience before judge and jury.
