State Rep. Spencer Collier (R – Mobile) has told the Political Parlor that he is “strongly looking at” a run for District 3 of the Mobile County Commission next year against Republican incumbent Mike Dean, a former two-term legislator himself. Collier has said in the past that he was not running for the Commission at least partly because he had “occupational considerations” related to his former employer’s business relationships with the county. He explained that times have changed, he has changed jobs, and Republicans fear that they are going to lose the seat.
Collier said he had supported recent legislation to expand the Mobile County Commission from three to five commissioners. Collier believed that five county districts could have been created that would have given the GOP at least three seats, but many Republicans did not support the plan because the GOP at the time had all three of the existing seats. Since then, Riley’s appointment of Juan Chastang to District 1 has not withstood a legal challenge. A special election for District 1 will be held later this year, and many expect that a Democrat will be elected.
Collier said that a strong Republican is needed to hold the District 3 seat, otherwise the Commission could go from being 3-0 Republican to 2-1 Democrat.
Collier would not have to resign from his House seat to run and so would have “a free shot” at the position.

Collier would be smart to stay put at this time given his recent scandal at the Alabama Safety Institute.
Umm, he quit his State Trooper job to go with Cunningham,Bounds (the biggest Dem law firm
in the state) as an investigator, then got the cushy job as director of the Alabama Safety
Institute, or as I call it, every man’s drunk school. What is he doing now, and why did he
leave API?
Spencer and I were both elected to the legislature 5 years ago. We have agreed with each other on some issues and we have had some heated arguments when we disagreed but I can say without a doubt he is one of the most honest legislators I have ever worked with and when he believed in an issue (and I was still on the opposite side)I still always had respect for his convictions. Whatever he runs for, he will do well.
It did sound like Willie is trying to raise an issue about Spencer’s integrity. With all the talk about legislators getting state jobs after being elected, here’s one who quit a state job after being elected. My friend Spencer might sometimes be a bit opinionated and even stubborn (qualities I guess we share), but I’ve never seen or heard anything about Spencer that would lead me to question his integrity.
Mike and Cam. I like Spencer, he represents my area and all us watermen. I think he is quite
honest. I was very surprised when he left the troopers to go with the biggest trial lawyer
outfit around. Then after a bit over a year he got the API job, and now I think he has left them.
What is going on? Jack alluded to something that happened at API!
Jack, I have not heard of any scandal involving Collier.
Willie, I understand that he is back at Cunningham Bounds…
Jack explained his comment. Thank you for elaborating.
I removed the explanation because I know of no way to verify.
The name of the Company Spencer left is ASI and maybe you need to find out wwhy he left and why the assistant director left also. I am just curious.
DEE
[...] Republican Juan Chastang and Democrat Merceria Ludgood won the primaries for the Mobile County Commission District 1 special election and will face each other on October 9. This race was mentioned here in the Parlor last month. [...]
To help with Dee’s curiousity. Spencer RESIGNED from his job at ASI and the office manager was TERMINATED. The purpose for these actions were due to his extra marital affairs. Yes she was the one he was having the affair with. This is not a rumor or scandal it is the truth. Now anyone who wants to be curious would wander why he was allowed to resign and she was terminated, they were both quilty of the same act. So if you still consider him a man showing honesty and integrity, then maybe my dictionary is out of date.
