Vivian FiguresOn the matter of state Sen. Vivian Figures (D – Mobile) being slow to officially announce her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Jeff Sessions

A media consultant has placed calls to people who may be interested in working on her campaign, and Figures “appears to be quietly putting together a campaign organization,” according to a Parlor source.

Sessions’ victory in opposing the immigration bill all but ensured his re-election. Before, he looked like someone who could be vulnerable against a strong candidate had he been on the ballot with a pro-choice New Yorker or a Mormon from Mass. Now, he has positioned himself as the George Wallace of the immigration movement and a Southerner born in Alabama looks to be the Republican nominee. My hunch would be the Sparks was intrigued by this race, saw it quickly becoming unwinnable, and decided to focus instead on becoming the Lt. Governor in 2010. I do think, however, that Vivian Figures is more than the traditional sacrificial lamb ala Susan Parker in 2002. If Figures hits Sessions hard on his terrible civil rights record and runs a campaign credible enough to earn some national coverage, this is a race that could pay off dividends elsewhere in terms of minority turnout, which may be a serious issue if Barack Obama is not on the ballot.

As a NYer living in Alabama I will give a view different than a typical self-hating southern liberal: Jeff Sessions is well-regarded among a majority of voters. No one, except a DC or NY ignoramus or a southern wannabee without bus fare, would compare him to George Wallace. Senator Sessions has been fighting the NY and San Francisco liberals to get AIDS and HIV funding to non-cities, where the disease is growing among African-Americans and minority women. He has been a champion of the black belt in Alabama. The biggest anti-illegal immigration crowd are southern black men, and they have gotten lots of access to the entire Alabama congressional legislation. Alabama voters do not vote along party lines.

My self-hate has been in remission since I became a Democrat, I was just stating political reality. As for Sessions and wallace, I actually meant the comment as a backhanded compliment to Sessions’ politically adept handling of the immigration issue. Sessions does have a weak record on civil rights and has made some highly suspect comments in the past. He will win reelection in 2008 but national Democrats will make every effort to paint him as on old-fashioned Southern racist in an effort to boost black turnout elsewhere.

    First women ever from Alabma

Give her some media time, put her in front of the people and let us decide it’s time we have a leader with the same hardships as we the people

I agree 2,000 percent I want someone that wants a better future for herself and her children as well as others and there children. I am from mobile alabama and Figures has the support of almost every person in the city. She is in the community doing this hands on 24/7 we believe in her and what she stands for…not because she is Black but because she Is real!! I’m a 24 yo graduate student and I’m concerned with my future and the future of my kids,as well as many other Alabamaians. With the way the country is run now ( republican parties ) I think the minority voters as well as non minority voters are going to have a better future in mind, which means voting for the candidate that will have our best interest at heart and not there pocket. My voter as well as many other students and concerns functional adults will be Vivian Davis Figures.
