Vivian Figures. Will she or won’t she run for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Republican incumbent Jeff Sessions? The state senator from Mobile continues to put off an official announcement that she is running for the seat, though she had made enough noise about it that state Agricultural Commissioner Ron Sparks decided not to challenge her in the Democratic primary.
Figures said she had thought about announcing July 14, but added that no one will force her into acting before she’s ready.
“If I am going to be running for this race, then I think it should be my decision on what I do and when I do it,” she said Friday.
She now expects to make a decision within a month or so.
I can’t help but wonder if she is going to pass on the race.
Ron Sparks understood that Figures would announce her entry into the race on July 14.
“The quicker you plant your stakes … the better chance you’ve got,” Sparks said in a phone interview. “It’s going to take a lot of money to run this race. It’s going to take a lot of work to run this race.”

For all of the hype this week about democrats and their ability to raise money, if Vivian Figures is the best they can do then Sessions will win big. Plus, with a strong candidate for President (pick any of the top contenders) the rest of the GOP field should do well.
Henry,
Do you include “None of the Above,” polling at 23% in an AP poll last week, in that top contenders list?
Even none of the above could beat Hillary and Obama. I can’t wait until they try to sell their snake oil in Alabama.
Yeah, I’m ready for the 2008 election to be here, too.
Mooncat, I believe we are seeing, as time goes on, that Vivian Figures was an excuse for Ron Sparks to not run against Sessions. With all this talk of “populism,” meaning class warfare, being the key to Democratic victories in Alabama, Jeff Sessions is a popular Republican in a state that, when it comes to national politics at the very least, is as red as they come. While I am certain I will hear about Bud Cramer and Artur Davis in response to this statement, do not forget they represent merely a portion of the state.
As for the 2008 Presidential race, you can sleep easy knowing the Republican Presidential candidate will take our electoral votes. Once again, this oft cited “populism” may work in the Southern periphery, but Alabama solidly supports Republican Presidential candidates. This, by the way, includes the possibility that John Edwards is the nominee. Forgetting the fact that his poll numbers are anemic and he now has to rely upon using his wife as a shield when criticizing his opponents, Edwards’ politics are far left and his profession as a trial lawyer, an ambulance chaser at that, will hardly endear him in the hearts of Alabama voters.
Thank God that Republicans never engage in class warfare to get elected.
Thank God Roy actually responds to analysis as opposed to ignoring what he does not want to hear.
Touchy.
