Rumored Candidates for Major Posts

A major update on the Alabama Line is coming later this morning. There are several new names listed – including the latest rumor from each party involving a major race.

Birmingham trial lawyer David Marsh (of Marsh, Rickard and Bryan) is reportedly considering a run as a Democrat against Republican incumbent Senator Jeff Sessions in 2008, according to rumors from multiple sources. Marsh himself is “not giving interviews or making statements on the subject,” according to a gatekeeper in his office, so that should tell you that at the very least the thought has crossed his mind. (Otherwise, they would simply say he’s not running.) David Marsh is the brother of state Senator Del Marsh (R – Anniston).

In GOP circles, several are telling the tale that Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins is considering a run as a Republican for the open governor’s seat in 2010. Dr. Hawkins has been Troy’s Chancellor since 1989.

The Alabama Line gives Marsh and Hawkins long odds of winning the respective races. Of course, the long odds will improve at least modestly if the rumors pan out and they officially announce their candidacies.

Look for the Alabama Line later this morning.

Kathy, it depends on why is he is running under a different party. You have to consider that question.

  • Potential Candidates…

I had been hearing rumors about Jack Hawkins, president of Troy University running for Governor, but had not heard it anymore. Today Doc’s has said that Dr. Hawkins is considering the move.
He also says that Senator Del Marsh (R-Anniston) has a b…

Yeah, now that I think about it, their Thanksgiving dinners are likely already strained. :)

Barbara, I was making a joke. Perhaps a bad one. Marsh may be running as a Democrat because he is one. I suppose he might put the D after his name because he’d have a greater than zero chance of winning the Democratic primary. There’s no way he’d take out Sessions in the Republican primary.

Kathy, I know it was a joke and it wasn’t a bad one either, but more seriously, a similiar situation occurred in a Jefferson County race last year in which most of us democrats were fooled big time by the candidate. I know nothing of the Marsh brothers politically and actually, I have never heard of them, but sometime we have to think and gather more information before we support someone based on just what party initial is by their name, like you correctly alluded to in your post.

Barbara, who did we get fooled by in Jefferson County last year? I may still be fooled.

The probate judge place 2 Democratic “nominee”.

Senate Passes Ban on No-Bid Contracts–Makes State Government More Accountable

I am very pleased that Senate Republicans joined with the Senate Democratic Caucus this week to pass a major piece of our legislative agenda.  SB 52, sponsored by Senator Lowell Barron, will end the abuse that we have seen of the awarding of no-bid contracts.  During Governor Riley’s seven years in office, he has awarded [...]
