On April 17, local attorney E. Ray McKee, Jr., announced his candidacy for the 2008 election to the House of Representatives Fifth District, a seat currently held by Cramer (D-Ala.). McKee, a Republican, holds a Ph.D in electrical engineering and is recently retired from the U.S. Government. His main platform is the enactment of the Fair Tax Bill into law.
Competition and debate are good, but this looks like an uphill climb for what is now essentially a one-issue Republican candidate in a Democratic leaning district (CD-05). The FairTax Plan has its fervent adherents, but it is not an idea that has moved into the mainstream of political discussion. A few candidates like McKee with a decent showing, and perhaps it will move that way.

One-issue candidates rarely win, but they do bring light to their issue and convince their opponent to talk about it. I think the FairTax is an interesting idea.
