On the occasion of the state Democrats’ Jefferson-Jackson Banquet featuring President Bill Clinton tomorrow night, here is a photograph from a similar occasion in the past with another Clinton connection. The featured speaker at the state Democrats’ fundraiser in May, 2002 was James Carville, famed for his work on Clinton’s presidential campaign and later a senior political advisor to the President.
As politicians sometimes do, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charles Bishop (and his wife) took advantage of the opportunity for a photograph with the guest. (The picture has since picked up some discoloration.) Bishop, former Democratic Agricultural Commissioner for the state, is now the Republican state senator from Jasper.

You mean a former Democrat got his picture taken with a prominent Democratic strategist? At a Democratic function? While he was a Democrat? Shocking.
seeing as how Bishop now trys to out-conservative everyone, i think it is relevant.
he was a conservative when he was a democrat. he may have been the last conservative democrat in this state. you think his views suddenly changed when he decided to become a repub?
I am not sure he was a conservative Democrat, or at least no more conservative than the rest of the AL Dems. He paid Joe Reed money all those years and tried hard to get the ADC endorsement in 2002.
People enjoy stories of people who make big changes in their lives. Repentant sinners telling their stories can pack out some churches. Bob Dylan went electric and they still talk about that change. Before and after pictures are staples of diets and hair salons. Something about change in people attracts our attention (or at least the attention of some of us), and Bishop is no different in that regard.
Plus, it led into my follow-up post with another story that people are enjoying telling around.
While I’ve enjoyed thinking about this a little bit, I’ve probably given this follow-up comment far more than it merited. :)
