Old Montgomery Capitol Legislative Dispatch

The good, the bad and the ugly

Filed under: Legislative Dispatch Rep. Randy Hinshaw @ 6:50 pm

It was a very interesting week for me this week.

The good:

I passed two bills out of the house for the city of Huntsville that is going to continue our outstanding Economic Development, as well as, community development programs. In Constitution and Elections, we passed the Constitutional Convention Referendum to rewrite Alabama’s Constitution.

The bad:

The bill I co-sponsored with Rep. Patricia Todd to raise Alabama’s minimum wage, was dealt a serious blow when it was sent to subcommittee. I hope Rep. Todd can get the sub committee members to compromise or agree to let the full house vote on this issue.

The ugly:

The Senate version of Rep. Jeff McLaughlin’s pac to pac transfer ban. Governor Riley’s attack on two year college employee’s ethics

The break is coming at exactly the right time. Things are getting tense.

  1. Rep. Hinshaw, I agree that the Senate version of the pac to pact transfer ban is, indeed, ugly. But I did not hear Governor riley attack the ethics of two year college employees. I did hear him call for a ban on legislators being employed by the two year college system. Given today’s (Sunday’s) atricle in the Birmingham News, I think Alabamians have good reason to ask whether Culverhouse is the person to oversee the system and whether state money has been used inappropriatly to hire legislators and their relatives (and I think with the recent convictions and Rep. Melton’s use of state money for personal gambling debts there is good reason for asking those questions). I’d like to give you a chance to tell your side of the story.

  2. Also, Rep. Hinshaw might want to speak to his own job in the two-year college system, earning more than $45,000 a year with the skills training consortium based out of Opelika while he lives in north Alabama. Because of this, perhaps he should be more forthcoming in his own connections when offering commentary on such things.
