Posted by The Birmingham News believes Sen. Wendell Mitchell’s committee has “soiled a bill that would have cleaned up the money laundering of campaign contributions through political action committees.”
Understandably, [House sponsor Rep. Jeff] McLaughlin is dissatisfied. McLaughlin, who for years has pushed a ban on money transfers between PACs, said that if the Senate passes the bill as amended, he will recommend the House not concur with the changes. Instead, he wants the bill sent to a conference committee to negotiate differences.
“I just want to get the best reform bill we can get,” McLaughlin said.
That ought to be the aim of every lawmaker. If you agree and would like to let Mitchell know you don’t like his amended version, call his Senate office at 334-242-7883.
But hurry, the Senate could consider his amended bill as early as today.
When you call, you might ask Sen. Mitchell’s office why he has broken a promise made in the Democrats’ “Covenant for the Future” to “ensure a vote” on a bill to “stop all PAC to PAC transfers.”
Democrats say they are for this. Republicans say they are for it. Gov. Riley is for it. Alabamians deserve to know who is trying to influence our politics.

Voters might also call Senator Mitchell at his home phone number 334-272-3308. If anyone from Senate District 30 (which he represents) calls him they might also ask him why he lives at 1806 Beauvoir Lake Court in Montgomery which is in Senate District 25. Living there puts him in direct violation of Section 47 of the Alabama Constitution.

I called. Apparently they are getting a lot of calls. The woman said she wasn’t getting any work done. I asked if any were supportive of the changes in the bill and she said no.
Wonderful. I was so tickled to read that someone actually called that I laughed out loud. It really did make my day.
I fear that we go round and round on some of these political topics/discussions and lose sight of the fact that our real goal is to encourage good public policy.
Would love to know if anyone else called.
