Former SoS Nancy Worley Indicted

Former Secretary of State Nancy WorleyNancy Worley’s lawyer has told AP that the former Secretary of State has been indicted on five felony counts and five misdemeanor counts accusing her of soliciting funds from employees for her re-election bid last fall. The Attorney General’s office has not made an announcement yet.

Ed Packard, Worley’s opponent during the Democratic primary and an employee of hers, filed a complaint with the attorney general’s office saying that Worley had sent “an envelope to her employees that had a place on the outside for them to mark whether they would like to volunteer in her campaign, post a bumper sticker on their vehicles, or make a contribution.”

Perhaps she will be more adroit in her defense than she was in her administration or her campaign.

Republican Beth Chapman defeated Worley in the fall general election. Worley has since been elected first vice chairman of the state’s Democratic Party.

haha well it looks like the big girls finally going down with a thud

well wont this just look great for the alabama democratic party: vote for our candidates, not only do we have former governors convicted of felonies, we have former constitutional officers AND party vice chairs! haha

  • How big has the hole gotten that she just keeps on diggin’ for herself? She’ll get off because she just keeps telling us that it is Republicans’ fault every time she gets in trouble. Reminds me of Flip Wilson and the devil made him do it!

Nancy “The laws don’t apply to me” Worley sent campaign solicitations to her employees. The state code prohibits that. It doesn’t say you can do it if you tell employees that there will be no retaliation if they respond. It says you can’t do it. Period. What about that is so hard to understand?

[She] is a disgrace to Alabama. Just like the rest of our suthen’ politicians, corrupt and self righteous.

  • The previous comment had a mean-spirited epithet that I edited out. If the original commenter objects to my change then we can delete the comment.

I understand political debate, partisan differences, and frustration at government dysfunction. I don’t understand just plain being mean.

I have known Nancy since her days in the classroom and as Alabama Education Association officer/president. She was always fair, always stood for kids and adults and always looked at all sides of an issue. I was far from the fair haired AEA member. I hardly ever agreeded with Paul Hubbard or his counterparts and spent a lot of time in trouble because of it but Nancy always took the time to single me out after a meeting or conference and tell me that she respected me for standing for my beliefs. Nancy cares about people and she’s stood through a lot in the last years to serve the people of Alabama. I’m proud to know her.

  • Thank you for your March 16th. comments, Patti- in the behalf of Nancy Worley…you
spoke the truth and you said it well. I wish we had more Nancy Worleys in public office…
and less of those who don’t measure up to her Christian, moral and ethical standards.
    Alabama needs Nancy Worley!!

She was the worst secretary of state ever. Lock her up and throw away the key.
