Hinton Mitchem (D – Union Grove) is the new Senate President pro tem by an 18-17 vote.
In the Senate’s organizing session a few minutes ago…
No formal effort was made to prevent Sen. Larry Means from taking his seat that had been a point of some controversy. Democrats Hinton Mitchem and Jim Preuitt were nominated for President pro tem.
Zeb Little tried to nominate Mitchem for a term of only two years, but McDowell Lee, presiding as Secretary of the Senate in Baxley’s absence, did not allow for a shorter term to be defined in the nomination.
Preuitt rose to ask that his name be removed from nomination and instead nominated Democrat E. B. McClain.
Gasps were heard in the chamber when Democrats Smitherman and Poole, who had previously committed publicly to support the coalition of Republicans and dissident Democrats, voted for Mitchem in the roll call vote.
All twelve Republicans and five Democrats voted for McClain. The Democrats voting for McClain were Tom Butler, Jimmy Holley, McClain, Larry Means, and Jim Preuitt.

SOS, different name.
Poole and who else bolted?
Susan, since you asked the question, I updated the post with more details. Poole and Smitherman were the two senators who moved their support from Preuitt to Mitchem.
Thanks Danny!
