Doc's Political Parlor

The Troy King 2010 campaign has begun to move in to its workspace (previously mentioned here) and a lease is being prepared, according to a reliable Political Parlor source. The campaign office is downstairs in Montgomery’s Capitol Towers, and it continues to be characterized by the King camp as being used for a re-election campaign. The Republican Attorney General is sounding like he is putting any gubernatorial ambitions on hold until after 2010.

Given that many observers expect state Finance Director Jim Main to be a leading candidate (or the leading candidate) to replace Judge Greg Shaw on the Court of Criminal Appeals, given that Governor Riley has a penchant of filling positions by promoting from among those close to him, and given that the expected upcoming budget crunch might amplify Riley’s desire to have someone in the Finance position with whom he has a strong and existing working relationship, was Twinkle Cavanaugh named to her position in the Finance Department at the 11th hour just before the hiring freeze was enacted with an eye toward making her Jim Main’s successor?

If so, would the flap over her placement there now make it untenable that she would become the Director? Or do you believe it unlikely that this was even a consideration in her placement there?

By percentage-point margin of victory, Democrat Bobby Bright’s win in the 2nd Congressional District was the 4th closest House race in the country, according to CQ Politics. CQ Politics points out that while the closest races are eyed as potential 2010 targets by the party who lost the race,

…a close race in one election cycle is not a guarantee that the next contest will be as close.

Of the 10 closest races by percentage margin in 2006, three ??? all Republican-held seats ??? flipped parties in 2008: North Carolina Rep. Robin Hayes lost a rematch with Democrat Larry Kissell and Democratic candidates won the seats left open by narrow 2006 GOP winners Heather A. Wilson and Deborah Pryce.

But the seven other seats won very narrowly in 2006, four by Democrats and three by Republicans, were retained by the incumbent party in the 2008 elections ??? and in every case, the winning margin was much more comfortable than it was two years earlier.

We’ll see how incumbency affects Bright’s reputation as being a less-than-enthusiastic campaign fundraiser.
