I’m thinking Halloween costumes…
princess
witch
skeleton
ghost
pirate

Looks like the real story here is how Pirate has begun to put distance between itself and Witch over the last year and a half or two years. Witch showed a rally in the fall of 2005 but couldn’t sustain it.
Princess’s ongoing challenge of Ghost for the top spot may have to make room for Pirate who appears to be elbowing into the mix.
Hmmmm, if you are researching halloween costumes, then you should really search for: princess costume, witch costume, skeleton costume, ghost costume, pirate costume

Pirate ends up on top here for three years straight. Arrrrr!

Reminds me of a terrible joke:
Why are pirates dressed the way they are?
They just Arrrrr.
And yes, you are exactly right that your way would be a better way to search for the costumes. But while I had Halloween costumes on the mind to prompt my thinking, I was really interested in how much people were searching (relatively) for princess, witch, pirate et al. That seems a lot more fun to me than looking for the costumes.
Though I will say that your search provides a far more interesting looking graph.
