The Company Riley Keeps

A new TV ad is out from the state Democrats asking pointed questions about Bill Johnson, a coordinator in Riley’s campaign who also served in Riley’s cabinet as head of ADECA.

The gist is that before Johnson was a leader in Riley’s circle, he didn’t pay his taxes for 14 years, he served with the mujahideen in Afghanistan, and when he ran for the Senate in Missouri he advocated legalizing marijuana and prostitution. None of these matters are disputed by Johnson. He did however scrub his website of his journal to remove mention of some of these items.

The state GOP has aired radio ads trying to tarnish Speaker of the House Seth Hammett (D – Andalusia) by his connection to indicted Rep. Bryant Melton. One radio ad says that voters in Hammett’s home county “judge people by the company they keep, and that’s how we should judge Seth Hammett.”

If the GOP wants to “judge people by the company they keep,” then they may have opened themselves up to some legitimate questions about Riley’s relationship to Bill Johnson.

You can see the TV spot here.

That’s the most substantive commercial I’ve heard of yet.

Pretty pathetic. Lucy’s own polls must show her further behind than the 21 points all the other polls do. This is a sure sign of desperation when you attack campaign staffers.

This Bill Johnson guy is more than a mere “staffer.” Personally, I like the guy, but I’m sure most Alabama “value voters” wouldn’t. I really like the theme of “the company you keep.”

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
