More on Yesterday’s Tax Reform Celebration
| Alabama Arise member Jeff Ridgeway and Rep. John Knight |
Everyone was in good spirits yesterday at the rally and picnic on the grounds of the Capitol to celebrate the recent tax reform win. Victories that long-sought and that hard-fought are especially appreciated.
The Governor had his celebration for this legislation at the signing ceremony on April 12; this day was for all the people who have championed tax reform for so long.
All of the speakers were pleased with the bill and noted that more needed to be done to make Alabama’s tax system fair. The new law provides about $60 million in tax cuts with about $40 million of it going to those who make less than $20,000 a year. Remember that taxes levied on people in poverty have been higher in Alabama than in any other state in the nation.
In particular, Rep. John Knight, who faces no challenger in the primary or the general election, said he looks forward to doing more for tax reform in the coming years. He especially praised Alabama Arise for their effort on this issue.
Speaker of the House Seth Hammett: “This is a good start. We’re making Alabama a better state.”
Sen. Quinton Ross: “This is not all we can do.”
Kimble Forrister of Alabama Arise: “Tax reform doesn’t have to mean tax increases. We proved that [with this bill]. Tax reform can mean tax fairness.”
