Did you see the story near the end of last week with Gov. Robert Bentley rebuking state Sen. Brian Taylor (R – Montgomery) last week for Taylor’s proposal to move the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to the Attorney General’s control? The proposal also allowed the Attorney General to take control of the Alabama [...]

Alabama pays its Governor $112,895 annually (if he’s even accepting the pay), according to data from Stateline this week. Thirty-four pay more, 15 less. That’s almost $18,000 less than the U.S. average of $130,595.
Alabama’s compensation is lower than any of its neighbors. Mississippi pays its chief executive $122,160, Tennessee $170,340, Georgia [...]

Last night, Gov Bentley gave the State of the State address, video and text at the Governor’s office. Wide debridement and vacuum assisted closure of the state budget seems the best summation.
House Minority Leader, Craig Ford, gave the Democratic Party response, the text of which can be found at WHNT, (BTW, [...]

Best summation of the recent testimony of confessed influence peddler, Jarrod Massey, I can think of. During a recent hearing, Massey admitted to paying then state Rep. Terry Spicer, from about 2002/2003 to 2009 for assistance in obtaining business. Some of the business included contracts from the junior college where Spicer was assistant [...]

New Lt. Governor Kay Ivey took the gavel for the first time to preside over the Senate yesterday. Kay Ivey’s first day in the Senate was the last in the Senate for long-time Secretary of the Senate McDowell Lee who is retiring before the Senate meets again on March 1.
The only matters of business for the day involved reports from the Committee on Assignments regarding minor changes to committee membership

Change at the Supreme Court will allow outgoing Governor Bob Riley the opportunity to put his imprint on a 2012 election at the Court.
Parlor friends who keep a close eye on the Supreme Court tell me that we should look for Justice Champ Lyons to resign before Monday and for outgoing Governor [...]

Folks close to the situation tell the Parlor that the Riley administration hopes to persuade Kelli Wise to step down a few days early from the Court of Criminal Appeals. As my email inbox explains, Riley would “then be able to appoint Judge Wise’s successor on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, rather than [...]

Here is the actual text of Governor Riley’s call for a special session in a .pdf file. The significance of the particulars is that the special session may not consider any other legislation not mentioned in the call – unless two-thirds of the legislature agrees to do so.

Legislative DispatchBy Joe Hubbard on June 8, 2011 This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session. For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end. For others, it was one that ended much too quickly. It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

AL House, AL Senate, Legislative Dispatch, Uncategorized | By John Merrill on May 24, 2011 As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
