Welcome to the AL - 02 Big List.

Alabama with the 2nd Congressional District highlightedThis list has been an attempt to keep up with everyone in either political party who has been credibly mentioned (in public or private) as a potential candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District since Rep. Terry Everett (R - Rehobeth) announced that he will not run for re-election.

Both parties’ qualifying period ended April 4, 2008. Three Democrats and six Republicans qualified for the primary race, and they are listed below. The primary is June 3.

The Political Parlor will update the Alabama Line (found in the sidebar) for the race, though perhaps not as fast as you like since input from a wide array of people is sought.

What would he not approve of? His video is on the website and out there for public use. Go to his site and view the video, nothing is taken out of context, Riley even shows a slide where Jay is the first person named for voting against the gov.

Governor Riley should call on her to take it down since it uses him I am certain in a way he does not approve of. Beason has taken her down to a new low.

I just saw Smith’s latest campaign ad. She is in the gutter.

If she is campaigning, where is she going? Who wants to bet she hasn’t left the house in 2 weeks? Smith is missing.

Sorry to tell you Terry, but she is indeed AWOL. She is letting her campaign folks speak for her and relying on negative ads to do the rest of the speaking. This has been her problem all along - she isn;t working for the job. She is just expecting she will win. I guess June 3 taught her nothing. But then again, if she does go around and speak too much, she hurts herself by doing that as she seems lost when it comes to depth on the issues. Maybe that is why you say she goes around and just “listens.” So, I guess they campaign is damned if she doesn’t do much talking, and likewise damned if she does. That happens when you don’t have a very good candidate. As has been said, all Beason is doing is re arranging deck chairs on the titanic, and that ship is going down. Come July 15, it will sink all together. Worse for Smith though, is the exposure this race has given her, has not been good. She will face a primary opponent in 2010 should she choose to run again.

Harri Anne Smith is not missing or AWOL, although I’m sure many of you Love staffers would love for her to be. She’s been out meeting people and campaigning hard for Congress the old fashioned way- talking to people and more importantly listening.

I also have found it interesting that Jay Love has tried to characterize her ads as “nasty and negative” when he devotes his entire spots to attacking her unfairly (talk about hypocrisy). Did anyone catch the narration at the beginning of his last ad- “When Harri Anne Smith attacks Conservative Christian Jay Love….” I guess that the little Conservative Christian Values thing isn’t confined to his signs that you see scattered around the district.

I have no doubt that Jay Love is a conservative (although some of his legislative actions have made me question that fact) and that he is a Christian. However, I am a steadfast believer in the saying “Actions speak louder than words”. Want to know one of the many reasons I support Harri Anne Smith? Because her actions as a state senator for 10 years from rural Alabama show that she is genuinely who she presents herself to be. Therefore, she does not have to scream Conservative Christian at every turn- she has the record to back it up without having to.

I find it amazing that Smith’s first negative ad criticized Love for raising taxes (which was false) and now her second ad criticizes Love for not raising taxes. Amazing and typical. Good job Beason - you are really earning your money!!!

Does anyone know if HAS has made any public appearances since June 20th, the day of her first attack ad. I do not believe that she has.

She is spinless and gutless! She is letting that “worm” Beason talk for her at public events and you would think he is the condidate. He barely mentions her name.

She will get what she deserves in time. Hang on Harri Anne you started this stuff and you WILL pay the consequences!

My taxes didn’t go up by 23 million.

And why is supporting education always seen as paying back Hubbert? Public Eduducation existed for a while without Hubbert and will exist when he is gone. If my third graded does not make an A in math, is that Paul Hubbert’s fault? If there is not toilet paper in the bathroom in the local high school, is that Hubbert’s problem to fix? Just because it deals with education does not automatically make it a Paul Payback.

Do you live in Elmore, Autauga, Montgomery, Covington, Pike, Butler, Barbour, Dale or Houston counties? If so, Harri Anne Smith raised your property taxes by $23M in a payback to Paul Hubbert for the $10,000 he gave her.

Sounds just like a Democrat. They always play th “fairness” card. The fact was this bill and the revenue increases were needed to balance the budget that year. That is why they were part of the Special Session.

That would make sense seeing as people the number of landlines decreases and cell phones increase. So we are sharing the tax burden and keeping from losing money.

Wrong. Check the fiscal note. It increased tax revenues coming into the state.

I did some research about this cell phone tax issue. Here is what I discovered from ALISON.The land line users were paying ALL of the tax burden for all types of phones. This unfairly targeted senior citizens who are more likely to have just a land line. In order to create parity so that the tax burden was shared by all phone users. Had Smith not voted for this bill, cell phone users would pay no taxes, and land line only users would have been paying the taxes for everyone. Common sense would tell you that people who have cell phones have more discretionary income than people who only have land lines.A rational person wouldn’t think it was fair that the people with the most limited incomes should be paying the taxes for the people who have more money. So it wasn’t a tax increase, it actually eased the tax burden on many.

LD you seem bitter, yet you know too much. Should your name on here be BB instead? You go out of your way to constantly trash HAS. How is this latest ad a lie? The video from the gov. is on his website and it is on the bottom row, right corner. Smith was nice compared to the Governor.

LD, they aren’t lies. The ads are inflammatory, but I remember that Riley was livid when Love voted against him on that bill. That was real - it isn’t dishonest. I imagine that some people will not like the ad but it is definitely not a lie.

It is ironic that last week she is attacking him for wanting to raise taxes now she is attacking him for voting not to raise taxes. That is quite a campaign she is running. Next week I am sure she will attack him for wanting to cut taxes. Her campaign has just been brilliantly run! She is doing such a good job in this Congressional campaign in 2 years she probably won’t have to worry about ever taking that pay raise again.
