Welcome to the AL - 02 Big List.
This list has been an attempt to keep up with everyone in either political party who has been credibly mentioned (in public or private) as a potential candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District since Rep. Terry Everett (R - Rehobeth) announced that he will not run for re-election.
Both parties’ qualifying period ended April 4, 2008. Three Democrats and six Republicans qualified for the primary race, and they are listed below. The primary is June 3.
The Political Parlor will update the Alabama Line (found in the sidebar) for the race, though perhaps not as fast as you like since input from a wide array of people is sought.

Schmidtke, Woods, Love and Smith have all loaned themselves over 6 figures. If you talk bad about one, talk bad about them all folks. Be fair. I am sick and tired of one getting bashed when they are all doing it. And so be it - unfortunately, politics in this context, takes cash.

This just in - Schmidtke received $8K in contributions this period, and has loaned himself a total of $528K, Net expenditures of $574K, cash on hand is $11K. Net after loans is minus $517K.

Harrie Anne Smith is in the same position. Spending money like crazy with little results.

#996 - I disagree. Love is running just like Perry Hooper, Jr. did in the last election cycle. That campaign bled money in the primary and was dead by the time it reached the finish line.
There is just so much donor money available to Love for the entire race and he has spent an awful lot of it already - and he hasn’t even made it to the runoff.
He is approaching $700,000 - and I doubt he wanted to spend much more than $1 million for the ENTIRE race through November. Any way you cut it, he’s way the hell over budget.
He cannot continue to spend like this. He has to know that. It smacks of desperation, even this early.
It looks just like Perry Hooper Jr. for PSC.

Candidadtes that are not over confident do that. It is best to run like you are behind that act like you are the pre ordained winner.

I think Love is in trouble. He looks ready to spend over $700K in the primary PRE-runoff. Confident candidates with strong poll numbers don’t do that.

We will probably have a run off between Love and Smith the way it looks.

I had two calls last night. One was a 3-4 minute survery. I have no idea who the poll was being done for. Candidates were called out alphabetically and I was asked to say if my opinion was favorable, unfavorable or negative. Of course, I was asked who I planend to vote for. The last question was the most interesting. He asked, “If their is a run-off between Jay Love and Harri Anne Smith who would you vote for.” The second caller had just one question asking me who I planed to vote for. When they read out the choices David Woods was first. I told her who I planned to vote for and then she said thank you and paid for by Woods for Congress. Interesting. I wonder if we will hear results of these two polls.

The last poll I saw by the Smith campaign had her at 21%, Love at 16%, Woods at 15%, Schmitke at 9% and Grimes at 4%. Evidently Mr. Martin did not show enough support to get a percentage point. That leaves 35% undecided?
Of course this is a Smith poll and is slanted toward her I’ m sure. Also, it is about a month old.
Does anyone have any other poll data to share?

FEC numbers are not updated on line for all candidates…

Net funding, after adjusting for candidate loans:
Bright - plus $151K
Smith - plus $37K
Woods - minus $101K
Love - minus $308K includes $100K loaned after 14 May
Comment by JRay — May 21, 2008 @ 5:40 pm
Just as an update, check FEC: Love, Smith, and Woods have reported on Repub side; Bright has reported on Dem side.

#986 HASmith’s 14 May Cash-on-hand is $161K, but she put in $123K of her own money. Guess she’s not doing as well as some had predicted. Should she now be HASbeen?
Comment by JRay — May 21, 2008 @ 5:11 pm
By Trial Lawyers and Democrat leaning PACs I guess you mean most of the Chamber of Commerce Committee of 100, land developers and people who know that Mayor Bright’s proven leadership and vision (Biscuits Stadium, Renaissance Hotel, Lower Crime) in Montgomery would translate into positive change and economic development for the entirety of District 2, right, Anon 981?
Sure he gets money from some lawyers and some Democrat PACs, because they know he is the best man for the job, and a proven giant beater.

the comments about smith still having over 200K is not only nutty - but just flat out false. I agree with the last post…folks on here make statements that are flat out false and could care less.

#972 and #979 speak like they know these facts. you do not and you do not have a clue. it is one thing to think you know what you are talking about, it is another to state as though it is fact.

#981 Re: Bright. probably so. and Woods got most of his from fellow broadcasters, broadcasting PACs, and large DC law firms. What’s your point?
Comment by JRay — May 21, 2008 @ 11:15 am
#981, when Smith’s report hits you will see she is definitely not hurting for money - unlike Jay Loan oops Love.
She - unlike Love- has donors.
Comment by Anonymous — May 21, 2008 @ 11:08 am
JRay - you are correct. Love has violated the millionaire’s rule, so other candidates now have more leeway to actually do something it is painfully obvious Love cannot - accept larger donations.
This extrat $100K in borrowed money would give him $240K to spend - which will still be a lot less than Smith and probably Woods will have.
Love’s ship is listing badly.

Dear Post 978, do you not think Smith is hurting for money?
Dear Post 979, do you not think Bright raised most of his cash from trial attorneys and democrat leaning PACs? Check it out.
